Shannon, also enjoy your updates. The rear section looks super, and so does the rest. Where you installed the crush sleeves will you also add to the front section to tie that to the frame???...Jim

Re: 1951 Chevy / C4

oldman3, Thank you. The crush tubes are welded in the back where the 4 bar bolts through the frame. They are so when you tighten the bolts up they do not compress the frame. I think you were talking about the tubes in the front, they are just welded to the front crossmember which is welded all into the frame. They just strenghten up the front horns because of the rack cut out.

48 GMC BURB, Thank you. Yes, I am very glad I took it on. I love building things. I will be glad when I have a frame that looks like yours for my 54.

Re: 1951 Chevy / C4

Shannon, I was referring to the four bar bracket, on the face it has 3 holes, was this how it bolted on the vette frame, or from the side like you did??...Jim

Re: 1951 Chevy / C4

oldman3, Now I see. You know it is Monday morning! HAHA Yes I think they were mounted by those 3 holes. Because the 4 bar bolts just had nuts on it and did not look like it was bolted to anything there. I am going to glue them on and gusset them ,I just wanted to see how everything looked.

Thats dead sexy! Beautiful work!

Ohh and the 69" front track width measurement with s10 wheels is extremely exciting since thats giving me hope that my expense billet wheels should fit.

Re: 1951 Chevy / C4

98layinframe, Thank you. Yes, I know what you mean on the wheels. I just had to stick them on and set it down on the ground to see what it looked like. I wish I had the wheels for this year vette to see how wide it will be. My buddy has 2 that I have to pick up to check. The back is narrow with these on. They need less back space and more front space. I have another 2 more s10 rims to put on the back. I will try to do that tonight and let you know what the outside to outside is.

Re: 1951 Chevy / C4

99 to Life, Kabwe, Thank you

98layinframe, I changed the rear wheels to the s10 ones. Outside tire to outside of tire is 71" and inside to inside is 54". So i would think you should be alright. You could go wider if it was in the backspace. There is about 3" to the 4 bar brackets, but then you would have to tub the bed sides by a little.

Re: 1951 Chevy / C4

Thanks for the pics! The fronts I have are 18x8 with 4.75" backspacing, so they will be close but should tuck fine. The rear... it looks like im gonna have to narrow the half shafts and tub the bed(which i expected) since my wheels are 18x9.5" with 3.75" backspace.

Shannon, 98layinframe ,I'm so glad you guys are working out the tire & rim
size !! I have been looking at combinations for weeks I like the full fender look with out tubs if I can ! It will be sweet to see what options are out there.
The rim & tire combination can make or brake the look of the truck.
It will be a challange to keep the rest of the build as BAD ASS as the frame!!!

Shannon, Continued thanks for your effort.

Re: 1951 Chevy / C4

Yeah the rear irs adds a bit of a challenge for wheel fitment, im assuming your just running coilovers so ya shouldnt have to much trouble with the negative camber, but for someone like me thats planning to run shockwaves the added neg camber when air down means a smaller backspace wheel or tub the bedsides. I had my 9.5" wide rims on a 52 that had a 4x4 s10 axle with 1" spacers on each side. The wheel/tire cleared the bedsides, but was just a little to wide to tuck up into the fender safely on a bagged truck. Static height non tucking ride height would of been fine. When the spacers came off, the fenders were perfectly happy and everything looked perfect.... except the inner bedside. The tire was squeezed against it.

Long story short.. my wider wheel and tire combo will work perfect on a 58" wide irs rear (crap for me) with a stock width irs, im not seeing why a 8" wide wheel with 4 or 4.5" of backspacing wouldnt work on a stock with irs but the wheel tubs part.. ehh not sure about that

Re: 1951 Chevy / C4

Homebuilt Hotrods, Thank you.

48 GMC BURB, We will get the bed on first then we can see just what we have. I know what you mean about it making a truck and we will do that. It is going to be a bad azz truck when done.

98layinframe, I have been thinking about this. Narrowing the rear is a boat load of work. Plus you have to not only narrow the half shafts, which would not be that bad, but you also have to narrow those aluminum arm under the half shaft or make new ones. The toe in and out links in the back would also not be too bad. The lower arms would probably be best if they were remade rather than welded. But I am thinking that way because I work in a machine shop. I do not like welding aluminum in that application. But another thing I was thinking was what if you widen the rear fenders. I do not like the 3" wider ones but maybe if they would ony be 1 -1 1/2 inches I think it would look all right. Plus I am sure it would be a lot cheaper than narrowing the rear. I know what you mean with thing getting tight with it going up and down on air. The other 48 truck I had a post on has the newer wider rear, factory fenders but the bed has maybe 2" tubs in it. It seems to work. I think it has a 8" rim on it.

Re: 1951 Chevy / C4

Its not all that bad really. I have a 94 irs thats already narrowed down to 54", the half shafts are about 70 bucks each to shorten and thats all i use from the stock stuff. The steering arm is cut down and rethreaded, or new links are made with chrome moly links and heim joints. The lower links are same except normally use poly bushing ends to quiet the ride a tiny bit.

I also plan to narrow the rails from the cab back a little so the side links can still be mounted similar to how you have them now on the stock width setup.

Re: 1951 Chevy / C4

98layinframe, no, that does not sound that bad. So the lowers are just modified and not cut and rewelded. I figured the half shafts would not be bad. I have made a lot of new drive shafts and would do the half shafts the same way. Do you have any pictures of the modified lowers? You sounds like you have it figured out how to get it to work. That is good then you can still use your wheels. But do you still have to tub the bed a little?

Bishops Trucks, Thank you

Re: 1951 Chevy / C4

SSABMUD, Thank you, you could always scrap your frame and start over. HAHA That is what I am doing. I have a s10 frame and a 8.8 3:73 posi but now I will have to look for another project for it!

I made the sheet metal plasma template to burn out the outer hub coil over brackets. They will bolt to the 4 bar and also tie into the factory shock hole. Then the coil overs will mount to the front tube. Then a little odds and ends welding then I will finish grind it and epoxy it.

No I think if I was going to scrap the S10 frame, I would save up and buy an Art Morrison frame. That way it may get finished in this decade.

Re: 1951 Chevy / C4

SSABMUD, Those frames are very nice. But you know they are never finished. HAHA.

98layinframe. I see how they did it now. That does not look that bad to do. That is a slick looking setup . I like it.

I now have the lower coil over mounts cut and mounted and made all the coil over tabs tonight , plus bent and coped the upper coil over mount tubes. Hopefully I can get them both mounted and welded tomorrow night.
