Re: PS bracket issue on '71
Are you going to drill and tap the crank?

Re: PS bracket issue on '71
No, I don't plan to. My biggest concern is room without pulling the radiator and grill. A friend of mine says he did one before and put it in the oven at 150 and then hit the center with a little heat when tapping it on.
I just want to be very careful with heat as I don't want to damage the rubber in between the inner and outer portions. |

Re: PS bracket issue on '71
Well, not enough room. Got it half way on and that was that. I ended up pulling the radiator to get more room.
Has anyone ever installed one of these HB's that isn't tapped for a center bolt? I think I'm going to need a socket that is about 2" in diameter which is what I'll hit instead of hitting the balancer directly. I had it heated to 170 for 30 min and put some oil on the crankshaft and still no go. I've never done this before so I don't want to force it and create a bigger problem. Any advice from the peanut gallery? |

I always used a block of wood but the V-8 all have been drilled and tapped so I could pull them up with a impact.

We wouldn't be having this dialogue if there was a damn crank bolt!

Re: PS bracket issue on '71
Change of plans. I feel like I'm going to damage something trying to get it on. My friend is bringing his taps over and we're going to drill and tap it. Would do it today but it's my wife's birthday so it looks like I'll finally have it next weekend.

Re: PS bracket issue on '71
Good deal.
Use a balancer installation tool and you will be fine. Fully engaged threads in the crank,... work much better than trying to pull it on with a bolt. (Too much of a chance of stripping your newly tapped threads, with just a bolt)

Re: PS bracket issue on '71
Thanks. I have the removal and installation tools so I should be good to go. Just need to find a crank bolt since it didn't come with one. Hopefully my local store has one. I know it's a 7/16" - 20.

Re: PS bracket issue on '71
She's alive! Drilling and tapping the crank was the best way to go, it slid on there like nothing. I'm going to enjoy it for a while before I tackle the PS install and possibly a booster for the brakes.
Thanks for the input everyone, it really was helpful. |

Re: PS bracket issue on '71
Congrats!
So is your pulley alignment better now?

Re: PS bracket issue on '71
Yes, right back where it should be. If anything the alt pulley is off by 1/4" when compared to the crank and fan but it should be just fine. I let it idle for 10 minutes and nothing. I will be careful and stay close to home for the first few drives.
