Re: My Daughter's 72 just made it home
here's another update. Got it up on a lift finally she is really rusty by MT standards. also found the wheel bearings, pitman arm and rag joint are shot. we replaced the wheel bearings today and now that my daughter has learner permit I ran it over to a nearby gravel road and she finally got to drive it a little bit and definitely confirmed the need for power steering she did fine going threw the curves but when we had to do a u turn in that narrow road it was a work out. I have rounded up 73 and up pump and steering box but I still need year correct pump mount so she doesn't have to replace water pump, alt brackets and all the pulleys. here's some pic's of the old girls rusty bottom.

Re: My Daughter's 72 just made it home
Hi Craig its not too bad better than mine.. Bondo Bob is the truck i am on at the moment, PO said everything had been done? what he meant to say was with bondo. both inner rockers where shot, outers replaced and glued on( will not pass an inspection here) and all four outriggers have been changed. My Cab corners were also shot , and part of the inner floor. Take plenty of reference points and keep the outer outriggers on as long as possible because it will act as a reference point for the inner rockers, they also at the front hold the bottoms of the wings on, and even with the repair hard to get lined up correctly. best of luck, and stick with it.

Re: My Daughter's 72 just made it home
that sucks when people don't repair things correctly tends to make a bigger problem for the next guy in which case I guess I'm lucky that this is a very honest truck no hidden surprises.
we also figured out the rest of the painted over door logo it's Central Electric wish they wouldn't have painted it over.

Re: My Daughter's 72 just made it home
You may want to look at the LMC catalog page 25 and figure out if it would be cheaper to replace the entire floor or to patch the rust.

Re: My Daughter's 72 just made it home
thankfully there's a guy in town that stocks all the patch panels so no freight as soon as I find employment again he's going to teach me how to do my rocker's, cab corners and then hopefully i'll be able to do her's

Re: My Daughter's 72 just made it home
FORDBGONE!!!! finally got all the extra holes welded up in the doors, removed those lovely ford mirrors, a little rattle can primer and paint and got some repop 72 sport mirrors installed. hoping I can buff it a bit around the edges of the new paint and hopefully get it to blend a little better but otherwise good to go until she get's rich and can afford the rust repairs. so far she's into the truck about 850-900. Thankfully the local's have been being pretty nice to her.

Re: My Daughter's 72 just made it home
here's a little update now that warmer weather is here finally started tinkering with the smurf a little bit. finished up the 7 pod inst swap, installed a new dash pad and seat cover. hauled a little over a ton of gravel home with it those weather checked tires had me nervous as hell and that bad engine smoke got a whole lot worse under load hee hee. feel sorry for all those that got stuck behind me. looking for a good turbo 350 and we are going to swap out the motor and trans and she should be pretty much ready for the road at least.

Re: My Daughter's 72 just made it home
THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!
How can a 1/2 ton truck haul more than a ton of anything? That's great man! One of the first things I want to haul in mine is a load of gravel and a load of "attic dek" to floor my house attic. I really wish you could save the 307 but it will be much cheaper to just get a good 350. |

Re: My Daughter's 72 just made it home
If one of you is really bored it wouldn't hurt my feelings if you told what year this motor is. Suppose to be 4bolt 350 and it was free

Re: My Daughter's 72 just made it home
The 010 blocks are good blocks. Should be a 327 or 350. Do you know what the suffix code is on the pad in front of the passenger head? That'll pinpoint what the motor came out of originally. Keep up the good work

Re: My Daughter's 72 just made it home
No dice looks like they painted over the numbers really thick. Pulling the heads now I'll see if they surface when we start scrubbing

Re: My Daughter's 72 just made it home
How do the heads look, any bent valves or push rods with rocker arms sitting at odd angles, or does everything look good?

Re: My Daughter's 72 just made it home
forgot to add, I still can't find any numbers on that front pad. they really laid down some thick black paint I was hitting it with brake clean and a wire brush and it's not budging. had some troubles getting a oil pan gasket as well all the 80's 350s showed the same gasket thankfully one of the o'reilly guys remembered having to get one from a 307 and he was right. which had me confused still as well since I thought all the small blocks would have the same pan gasket

Re: My Daughter's 72 just made it home
That's awesome. I had a '72 in high school too...I went to Shepherd (cow pie high), Go Mustangs! Worked at the Kmart in the heights. My dad used to be a regular at the Jailhouse. I heard that's all gone now...I haven't been back to MT in almost 20 years now.
