Bought myself another set of wheels for my '64 short bed step side today. Original 16" wheels and hubcaps with just the right amount of Patina to match my truck. They need tyres as the old cross-plys are well passed their best.
What size modern tyres are you guys running on these wheels on your trucks? Picking them up this weekend - can't wait! Also scored a free pair of 1" wheel spacers which I'll probably put on the back axle with these new wheels, just to fill the rear wings (sorry, fenders!) out a bit |

Nice.
Next thing you will be headed to the USA or Canada to go find more spares for your truck, or to check out what's all available over there. Looking forward to the new wheels getting fitted. Have you checked out the German tyre sellers? They will sell and deliver for a lot less than you can get the same tyres in the UK. Correct me if I am wrong, but is 16" a size fitted to modern Range Rovers etc??

I picked up a set of 16 inch wheels from a '61 to go on my '64. Will look something like this when done......... The seller owns the lovely red Apache with the pop up load bed cover which is a couple of entries above in this thread. Pictures don't do it justice, it's really nice. He also has this '60 GMC long bed which he's imported to the UK and is giving a once over before selling it on |

Can anyone tell me the standard tyre size for a '64 C-10?
I'm trying to find out the overall tyre height on a standard truck (when it left the factory). I appreciate it would have had cross-ply tyres on then, not modern radials but I want to get the tyre height (and therefore the rolling circumference) about right so the gearing is as it should be. I think it would have had 30" tall tyres - is that right? My truck has aftermarket 15" wheels with 275/60x15 tyres on the back and 235/70 x 15 tyres on the front. I think that originally the tyres were about 30" tall on the stock rims. My rear tyres are only about 27.5" tall and the fronts are about 27.75" tall, so the gearing is way out, it revs higher than it should at higher speed, and I guess the speedo is not accurate either as the circumference of the rear tyre is currently 86.35", whereas a standard 30" tall tyre would have a circumference of 94.2". The current tyre is therefore only 91.67% the size of the original - does that make sense? I was going to fit some 16" wheels I recently bought (which came off a 1961 C-10) but think I can keep my wheels instead and fit narrower, but taller tyres. I'm thinking 245/ 70 or 75 x 15 on the back, and 235/ 80 x 15 on the front. - both should give an overall tyre height of around 30" according to my calculations Just need confirmation that the originals were about 30" tall - can anyone confirm? Very nice truck. It is cool seeing American vehicles around the world. It is very similar to my 1966 step side. We attend Pomona swap meet quite often and meet many people from all around the world looking for vehicles to ship over seas. Some day I hope to see London. My grandparents were born and raised there. Good luck with your pickup.

The nice thing about vehicles is if you grow tired of it you can always change it. I like them all different ways. My 55 is original repainted about 35 years or more ago. I had my daughter make me the logo from the dealership in Phoenix , AZ where it came from so I too have a real patina vehicle. I also have a 1970 Short Fleet side and a 1972 CST. Here are some photos of the others.

I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure!
All I did today was take my truck out for a drive. Was only meaning to pop out for 10 minutes to drive it round the block but was enjoying it so much I ended up doing about 70 miles
I wanted to take some pictures of it today as I'm thinking about selling it to replace it with a 2008 Mustang GT. Spent ages writing an ad which I put on a hot rod forum in the UK and the only responses have been from people saying 'don't do it, Mustangs are 10 a penny but where in the UK will you find another truck like that'. I think they may be right |

All I can offer is to consider how you'll feel about your truck in ten years, how much it will be worth then and how hard it will be to find and acquire a replica had you let it go.
Then ponder how you'll feel about a 2008 Mustang in 10 years, when it's ten years older. In fact, if you wait a few years you might be able to pick one up for next to nothing!

Kerry as for trading the truck for the mustang I do see where you are coming from . Yes you probably will use the mustang more , but as Markeb01 has pointed out in a few years the mustang will depreciate in value and the Truck will only go up in value . I understand you will need to put some money towards the Mustang have you thought of spending that money on a v8 for the truck then you will have the best of both worlds . Only a thought ?

Try to put a load of wood or haul parts in a mustang. I would miss my trucks if I tried them for a modern car.There is nothing like the feel of classic cars and trucks.

Bit of a sad day as I sold my truck today.
It's gone to a nice guy called James, who restores vintage juke-boxes for a living and wants to use it as a shop truck. I've steered him towards this forum as being THE place for info, advice, ideas and chat about 60-66 Chevy trucks. Hopefully he'll make an appearance and introduce himself. I'm sure he has ideas of his own about how my old truck will develop in the future. Don't think you've seen the last of me though - Grizz has already implanted the germ of an idea about commissioning a build in the future and then shipping it back to the UK as there are some very skilled truck builders on here. I retire from my present line of work in a couple of years and I'm thinking another truck would be a perfect retirement present for myself - gonna have to be a fast V8 this time though |

I think you did the right thing for YOU Kerry.
Ultimately, for many of us, this is a hobby and they are there to bring us pleasure. I suspect that even if we gave you a Mustang built by Chip Foose, you would eventually tire of it, and buy a rat rod again to get away from the clinical purity of a high end build. It will be great if James could take over your build thread, along with the moderators maybe changing the title to reflect his ownership but retaining the log of your work to date, as you were really its first enthusiast keeper in the UK. Come show us your new car when you get it.
