Re: What did you do to your Suburban Today?
How did I miss this one?! I have been posting on the truck side. I can't say I did much more then drive it like I have the past few years. I did use it as a truck if that counts?

Re: What did you do to your Suburban Today?
I replaced the starter last night. My solenoid bat terminal was loose and became inconsistent cranking. I replaced with the newer, smaller, higher torque (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PWM-9112) starter. Of course things are never easy. I had to remove the dust guard because it was scraping when I accelerated and/or turned (only made it one house down). It also starts great when cold but wouldn't restart after I got to work. I noticed last night it was slower after a short test drive.

Re: What did you do to your Suburban Today?
Took the hubs off my dana 60 after finally getting the right spindle nut socket.
Progress is slow at the moment. I think I might spend some time detailing the engine bay, etc while I save funds for the next steps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-yTvQLBJ5I

Finished buffing out most of the paint with rubbing compound and installed the 15x5.5 steelies on the front with a slightly smaller tire for more a rake look still need to install the drop spindles and do the disc brake conversion. Ignore my dead grass (due to the drought and higher water rates)

Re: What did you do to your Suburban Today?
How to install a starter in only 6 days...
Wow, what a task that ended up being. I was able to physically install the starter last Monday night, but it took the rest of the week to get it right, specifically the wiring. I "upgraded" to the newer gear ratio starter which costs more but is smaller, lighter, less current and spins faster. I wasn't aware they are more sensitive to voltage. I rewired the electric fans to be off during start (when hot), I rewired the bat + & - increasing to 2awg wire. After all that, I still had to rewire the solenoid wire to go thru a relay. This gets the starter & solenoid voltage up over 11V...finally...and cranky very quick. I still have to reinstall the dust cover. I also did a lot of timing gyrations thinking the initial timing was loading the engine too much which in turn was slowing the crank. In doing this, I did see the harmonic balancer seal coming out and a new plug wire gone from an exhaust manifold crack...my next week's entry in this thread. |

Re: What did you do to your Suburban Today?
Installed drilled and slotted rotors, new drums, new wheel cylinders, new ceramic pads/shoes, drum spring kit, new wheel bearings/seals. It was a busy day. Huge improvement!! Glad I will not have to do that for a long time!!!!!!

Re: What did you do to your Suburban Today?
Today when I walked by the ol burb I noticed a good layer of dust so I wrote "wash me" on the back window. The next time I walked by I crossed it out and wrote "finish me"

Re: What did you do to your Suburban Today?
Kinda of an odd idea but something I've been pondering with the theme I'm going for, using a gun rack to haul vintage skateboards, the one pictured is not vintage however just for looks until I find an old 70's longboard.

Because the weather was so nice, I took him for a little 150 mile cruise around S.W. Manitoba with a few other car guys and gals.

Re: What did you do to your Suburban Today?
Over the past week...
I replaced all the shocks with CPP's brand and replaced the rear lower brackets with the relocation bracket. I may replace the upper bracket too at some point, but this really helped the ride and moved the rears enough to not hit the axle. Nice to have a smoother ride. The next few days were spent moving stuff from the house into a storage unit. I probably made at least 10 trips. Nice to have the ability to haul. I took a day off and went to the Daytona Speedway for the Turkey Rod Run which fills the whole infield with classic show cars, clubs and cars/parts for sale . Nice to have a people hauler that doubles a classic show car too. I saw 5 other burbs there which is more than I've previously seen. I hope this means we're growing in popularity and price. In all, it's a fun, useful vehicle. |
