Re: Windsheild Install OOHH my!!!

HOOOAYYYY!!! Mywindshield is in!! My son-in-law had a church friend that installs auto glass and got him to come over and put it in. THANK YOU Mike's Auto Glass!!!

Made me a bit nervous when he brought out the rubber hammer. He used it to get the non-OEM top trim to lay flat in the corners. Bottom trim is not quite flat but he said to get in the sun and get the gasket to relax some. Once it has done that and if the trim doesn't set down to give him a call. Watching him do it I would have used up my bad word vocabulary, in all languages, in the first 30 minutes.

Well does it leak?

I would love to hear some details about the install.

Re: Windsheild Install OOHH my!!!

no leak test yet. I just finished cleaning up the glass.

The install was interesting to watch. The guy that did it has 30 years experience so he basically did it by himself. After he installed the cord he sprayed it down with WD-40 as he didn't have any silicone spray. He actually started pulling the bottom in first and worked his way around to the center top. I asked him if he needed my help he said no. The only issue he ran into was the passenger side corner clip came off the top trim. Took him about a half hour to fix it. The trim did come up a bit in a couple spots but he used a rubber hammer to knock the trim down and lock in. We talked some and he said the biggest issue people have is that they don't know about the second lip on the seal. They don't pull the second seal over the pinch well and the glass is not locked in place.

Re: Windsheild Install OOHH my!!!

would ya mind telling how much he charged? I think i would rather pay someone who knows what they are doing than to try myself and fudge it all up. wonder what the ballpark would be on an install job...

Re: Windsheild Install OOHH my!!!

Kev,
He quoted me $150 and I had to supply all the parts for the install. One of his first questions was who made the gasket. When I told him it was from Precision he said ok to the install. When he was done I asked him what the damage was and he gave me the family price of $100. I was so happy to have it installed I gave him the $150 he quoted me.

PS: I went out today and worked the gasket some and got the trim to fully seat all the way around.

Re: Windsheild Install OOHH my!!!

I just received two quotes for an front window install.
$350 for one and $300 for the other.
That's with me providing the windshield and rubber. Window has the stainless trim.
You got a deal.

Re: Windsheild Install OOHH my!!!

I’ve been trying to find someone local that can get the Pilkington glass but nobody can. Haven’t been able to find any place online I can purchase it and have it shipped to me either. I need two windshields. Brothers says they can get it but I’ve been trying to get a shipping quote for almost 6 months.

I just got off the phone with them. The woman I spoke with sounded like a valley girl, I swear.

She said the do still make them part #685

She could give me no other information such as cost, local distributors or installers. She said to call around to find someone with an account. I explained I have been looking for 6 months to a year and want to but from a USA company and she seemed bothered to talk to me so take it for what its worth?

Contacted the auto city glass on Ebay, thanks for the information. Out of stock at the moment. Another is sold with gasket but not for trim? I'll update when I get more info.

Re: Windsheild Install OOHH my!!!

I just called one of the local glass shops and they could only get the PGW windshield locally , about $200.00 cash and carry green tint. The side glass and vents along with a small back glass I"ll order from Auto city glass , Just like everything else buy it before the prices go up just like everything else .

Re: Windsheild Install OOHH my!!!

I got my glass kit from Auto City Glass off Ebay. The main reason was they were the only ones I could find at the time that had green tinted glass for all the windows. The main reason for my issue in finding it was that I have a '67 with a small rear window.

Re: Windsheild Install OOHH my!!!

I had my Auto city gray tinted glass installed today. Here in the Pacific Northwest the price was $300. Quoted me $350 but received a discount because the stainless and gasket were already installed on the glass. Took them about an hour. This was mobile service at my shop. They used spray glass cleaner to lube the gasket. Also noted the double lip in the gasket. Did put the tape in along the stainless and the glass. In the same direction as the gasket runs. So it wasn't in the way at all when they roped it in. This kept the stainless in place. The installers didn't use any sealant between the rubber and the body pinch-weld.

Re: Windsheild Install OOHH my!!!

It looks great . pre installing the gasket and trim is the ticket to an easier install and sure helps the corners lay right .

Polish the stainless trim before removing your old windshield . https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...d.php?t=765868

Re: Windsheild Install OOHH my!!!

install looks good Accelo glad to hear you got it install. I was surprised when my guy didn't put sealant in the pinch well. He said you don't need it unless it leaks. Told me if it leaked to let him know and he would come out and fix it.
