Smile Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

I think I requested a sample from them about 10 days ago, have not received it yet. I'll try again. How about the white vinyl material, would they sell that too? I have a real good upholsterer in Mexico that would do my seat for about $150, just need to get the material.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Found this one on EBay today. Interesting in that its a non-package Highlander with the DG4 Mirrors ( which have been replaced ), tilt wheel and A/C which came with the Highlander Packages. Its amazing how of lots of Highlanders were altered over the years with the biggest thing being the plaid seat material replaced. Talking with the original owners son about my Highlander I asked if his Dad had special ordered the truck because of the way its equipped. He said his Dad hated the green plaid seat and put a very thick seat cover on when the truck was a few weeks old. That isn't to say someone else ordered my truck and didnt' follow through with the deal when it arrived.

Promo package codes and savings over individual option costs.

A= YG6 Plaid Trim, Special Wheelcovers C10 (PA1) or
Chrome Hubcaps C20-30 (PO3), Chrome Front Bumper, Upper Bodyside Molding (belt, pickups only), Door Edge Guards and Below Eye-Line Mirrors (DG4) A $94.50 savings.

B= YG7 (includes A) Adds Turbo-Hydramatic Trans., Power Steering and Tilt. A $178.50 savings.

C= YG8 (includes A and B) Adds A/C and Tint. A $260.50 savings.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Already Gone, I figured when you said there was no package called out on the SPID that it was an Atlanta truck. I have never seen an Atlanta truck that listed the promotional package, even when they have all the separate options. I have one, and have seen quite a few others. I would love for someone to post an Atlanta SPID with the promo package.

You are absolutely right. Now that you mention the Atlanta non package code on the spid this truck has all the options that came in the YG8 Promo Package "C".

There is only one guy in the world that does these and he supplies them to only two places I know of. This is the original plaid material that is specially woven and very expensive. And the proper color, texture and scrolling work in the vinyl. I bought mine at Southwest Classics in Dallas. You are going to want to talk to Nick, (Nicholas Goodman on FB). www.swclassics.com. This is a perfect tight fit and everything is exactly how it was new. Not cheap. almost 800 for bottom and top covers. I believe he can get any color. I got the last green one and not sure if he has the gray or orange in stock. He told me today that he has some on order. If they are not already ready for shipping it could take a few months to get. But well worth the wait and the cost. I am very pleased, it cost more than my living room couch and I make sure my clothes are clean before I drive it Just finished it like 2 weeks ago. I was told in another thread the other supplier is carsinc. I don't know the cost of theirs but they look the same. If you want to do it yourself the only people still weaving this pattern is SMS Auto Fabric @ https://www.smsautofabrics.com/. It was late 2015 when they were finishing up a new roll and they quoted me 95 dollars a yard the bolt is 60in wide and would take almost 2 yards to make. BUT the vinyl I did not source and no idea how to do the scroll work. To be honest the 779.00 I paid swclassics was well worth it. the cloth is backed and everything it done right!

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Ok, so I am going backward in the thread and am in the mid 30s for pages.. wow.. I see that Tim does these seats, not sure if he did mine or not but whoever did it was fantastic. I have a quick question. Before I recovered this, the old seat, an older not so good recover had spots on the back of the seat where it wore through because I keep the seat all the way back, it tends to rub against the cab. If I keep the seat one click up where it isn't then I get movement in the seat, any suggestions on either keeping the cover from wearing holes or how to keep the seat from moving and making noise on the tracks? I will have to maybe cut some rubber and tighten up the teeth where the pin rests... IDK..

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

I figured some would like to see this. I sold this to my uncle when I was having a bit of a hard time and had to move out of state. He took good care of it and actually did a frame off restoration of the truck, never had a spot of rust on it until I moved it to PA. Well a couple years in PA and it needed inner fender wells, it looks like new rockers, cab corners are done, and I dont think this is the original bed or tailgate. Whoever did it took my second gas tank, the floor diverter switch, stripped all the chrome and did not put it back, stripped all the AC out from under the hood. I just finished putting all new stock AC under the hood, redid the entire interior. Just bought a used GM AM radio that should be in it. The paint is now about 10 yrs old and showing its age, same color but changed the roof to silver and no white stripe. But it is coming along. I need to find all the outside side trim, tail trim and repaint and will be me sharp again! Here is a Google image taken outside my house

And the nose today!

I am told that not too many Custom Campers had the Highlander plaid seats

And one last pic, my Nitro 72 4x4

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

The vinyl on mine is original. It has some small holes where the springs wore through the vinyl. A local guy that does upholstery repair worked his magic and filled the holes. He made a mold of the grain pattern and stamped the repaired areas so the grain is correct. He also nailed the color match.
Then I bought the plaid fabric from SMS and had another local guy replace the plaid. It wasn't cheap but not as expensive as mentioned above, plus I have the original vinyl. Now I need to clean the seat belts.

Gray plaid is not available right now. I ordered and paid for 2 yards back in November and have yet to see it, they won't even get me an ETA (or answer the phone for that matter) or an actual status on where the material is in process besides "it is being weaved right now, you'll have it soon".

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

I talked to SMS fabrics yesterday, $99 per yard for the blue plaid, a bit expensive. I think it takes about 2 yds for the blue plaid inserts, plus another 2 yds. for the white vinyl, plus labor to have one made. It could turn out to be one expensive seat cover.

I bought a red/red houndstooth seat cover from Southwest classics last year for $389, but this type of seat cover is not being sold anywhere. Maybe it is just for the rich and famous, lol

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

I just had a set of buckets done using the original parchment vinyl with the green plaid material I got from SMS. It was 95.00 a yard and I bought 2 yards cause I wanted the lines symetrical and wanted to make sure there was enough material to do that and I have some left over. My upholsterer took a little license with my seats by quilting the cushions but I like it and they are comfy. Now to get my console done and get the buckets/console installed in my truck. Yes, I know you couldn't get buckets and console in a Custom/Deluxe let alone a Highlander but Chipflyer made me a spid to verify my buckets.

Possible hidden highlander here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1972-Chevrol...1ZGQ9E&vxp=mtr
1 clue that kinda gives it away to me, however, all depends which parts were modified or replaced in black vs. parchment. i.e. note the parchment visors with black door panels - not correct, one isn't original. Only a SPID will prove my theory though...
Starting bid seems a bit pricey at $8k, but that's just to how it seems to me. Might be your dream truck!

I'm with you Mark. I posted this truck last month when it first went on Ebay in mid May (Post 1041) and pretty much have the same thoughts as you about it. When it first went on EBay it was at 11,900 then 10,900 then 8900 and now 7999.00 and like the Limbo Song, "How Low Can He Go "
