Yeah exactly, what you had said before, I think people are just skeptical because boss didn't advertise or report on this wheel change, so people didn't want to order a wheel and find out they didn't get exactly what they wanted. But it is such a good looking wheel.

I'm doing a few changes on the truck, one of them is converting to five lug. So they don't quite fit yet. Plus mr IRS decided he wanted some money from me so needless to say things have slowed down.

Lol damn man i know exactly how that feels usually i owe everyone money this time actually got enough back to buy rims and tires then i get T-boned in my truck so have to buy rims now, old ones got damaged so instead of repairing them i get to put that money towards it like a discount haha and some free body work

It's easy to use no spacers in the rear when you don't need to worry about rubbing on bed sides or wheel tubs. Looks good but I wouldn't want anyone to get the idea that these are just an easy bolt-on application for all trucks of this era.

Nothing is easy about these wheels.I renamed them 666's.
It takes some work to make them fit, but that is what makes the difference.


Rear has been narrowed 2.75 inches per side.
Front rotors, spindles, dust caps, and wheels all have been modified.

That info might have been helpful to include in your original post. We've gone through more than 1100 posts in this thread alone trying to get accurate info out there about these wheels, so for you to just come along and effectively say, "Hey, look how well these fit without spacers," really isn't helping. Good-looking project and I'm sure there's a lot of time and effort involved, but including all that info up front would have saved some time and consternation.

I have a 68 stepside with 8.5 &10" fronts fit fine with 79 c10 arms spindles and disks. The back is original 68 6 lug rear had it redrilled did disc brakes and 3" tubs made from 70 pickup im running 315/35/20 on back and still have 2" of inside room

I think some are running a 1/4" spacer to clear the nose of the rotor.
Most just grind the leading edge of the rotor nose, so the wheel will clear.
It's all spelled out in the thread.

I'm not gonna revisit the whole process because it *is* already in this thread. I will say that both sides can be ground down with an electric grinder faster than I was able to type the reply on this damned iPad.

I got a PM from a new member today, saying he had purchased the Boss 338 wheels.
He was told they had been redesigned, and would now fit,...
(I assume the 1-1/4" rotors).

Guess what,... they still require the "nose" of the rotor machined or ground down.

Boss Wheels REALLY missed the mark when they made these wheels,... and had a chance to fix it when they redesigned them.
BUT THEY COULDN'T GET THAT RIGHT, EITHER.

I'm still surprised the number of sets that are rolling on these old classic trucks, even though the fronts require rotor mods and most rear wheels require spacers.
Are you listening Boss Wheels?

They probably have sold as many or more than they expected to....but what they don't realize is that they would have sold countless more sets to guys who now won't buy because of the issues...

You are correct.
And the 88-98 truck owners, that these wheels were designed for, are not really running these wheels.
Its the guys that own the 60-70 5-lug conversion trucks and the 71-87 trucks, that they are so popular on.

Have to agree completely. Not sure why they wouldn't make the necessary changes to their tooling? They are leaving a bunch of money on the table by not fixing the issues.

personally, I think it makes the wheel more "mystic" The wheels are not that hard to make fit especially now that there are a bunch of online instruction on how to do it. Those of us willing to put in a little effort and some ingenuity should be proud that they have something that the average joe cant just buy and slap on on his or her truck. Its my belief the less people who have them the better!

That would be me, the new guy. This thread came up on a google search, I read many of the posts and even saw on Boss' website that the new wheel was out and fitment issues were solved, but it may have just been the problem with the dust cap they were referring to.
Either way, the fronts still don't fit.
But the good part is, I found this site and registered. This thread was very informative and my rotors are currently sitting in the local machine shop.

The retooling claims have to be for the dust cap. Nothing else seems to change. My only thought is that they know the guys that want these know the change that needs to be made so why bother retooling. Enough people still use them. It does still seem like a simple design mod they could do unless there isn't enough meet in the center to make the hole bigger. It's been too long since I had my set and I don't remember the center design. They do look good on these trucks!

The only revision they've done lately is to add some meat to the back of the 20x10 version to make spacers unnecessary, but visually they look identical when installed. (They just added an inch or so of hub material on the back, the same thing we've accomplished by using spacers.) As much as it would make sense to us, I don't think AEW/Boss has any inclination to retool these wheels again. As k5hart suggested, the modifications needed to use these are a lot cheaper/easier for us than it is for AEW/Boss to retool again.

Curious. Where would one take rotors to shave down the hub?
Think any shop that does brake work could do it or would it have to be a machine shop?
