Re: just totaled my 69 and almost totaled me

Berencam. I also say you are very lucky to be alive. That was some impact. I'm so glad you had the belt on or you most likely wouldn't have made it. It was a nice gesture to call David's family but understand they are going through an awful lot right now. Along with dealing with his death they have to be wondering if a lawsuit is soon to be on them also. In this day and time that would be a normal assumption. I feel sure you have no ill feelings toward his family and only wanted to offer your condolences. Maybe sending them a nice card with a short note would be a better approach right now.

To the poster who said maybe God put you there at that time to save someone else from this guy. I don't think I have ever looked at it that way. What a wonderful thought.

Berencam, I wish you a speedy recovery my friend. Take your time and you'll find another truck. Maybe better than this one.

Like all the rest I'm glad you survived. Am sorry for the other guy and his family's loss.

Your situation reminds me of a front end collision when I was about 11. College age guy with a VW van passing another car in the fog. We were in a a Chevelle pulling a boat and trailer. He hit us head on. He survived but with broken legs, broken jaw and concussion (from smacking the side of the boat while he was airborne). We only received broken bones and cuts. There again, GVW had a big part to play in the outcome.

Your blue and white truck also reminds me too much of my own toy.

My prayers for a speedy recovery are with you and your loved ones.

couple things about that i actually had a picture of your truck in my truck when i wrecked. i was planning on making my truck look like yours. and yeah im going to have about 2 months to recover so yeah reading these forums is about all i can do. thanks for all the concerns and thoughts. ill update this when i get more information from the police report. as of now i know he was driving A 96 mercury sable and had to be doing at least 60 (the speed limit was 45). he bounced off my truck after impacted but my truck stayed still.

Re: just totaled my 69 and almost totaled me

Im glad you are still alive. I feel for your family and the family of the kid who hit you, but I personally do not feel badly for him. He knew the consequences before getting drunk, and sadly his decision had to affect you and his family in this way.

I had gotten run off the road in a newer Hummer H2 by a drunk high school senior over the summer and did 13k in damage. I swerved to miss him, hit a 2 ft+ tall curb, but somehow missed a telephone pole by less than 2 feet. The kid was pulled over a few miles down the road, they had 7 drunk kids on their way home from a party in a Scion Tc. I couldnt've imagined me hitting the scion with a 6000 lb truck and the impact on their car and the families lives. Sorry, but I dont feel badly for him. I still to this day haven't recieved an apoligy from him/the kids in the car for what happened that night.

Berencam, im glad your keeping high spirits throught this, and even though a beautiful truck was lost, it was better than both you and the truck being lost. heal up quick!

Sorry about the accident.

I've used this post in a life lesson with my 13 year old son and 11 year old daughter.

It seems like every time there is a fatality with a drunk, the drunk staggers away while innocent victims get killed.

Re: just totaled my 69 and almost totaled me

God was really looking over you. I hope you have a speedy recovery. I think I overlooked it...Did you have lap or shoulder seatbelts?

If your going to build another truck maybe you should keep the seatbelts out of this one for the new one...They seem to work pretty good....or they did.....Or keep the whole truck for parts.

Hey berencam...after reading all these responses it is obvious our feelings are all over the place. As for you we all agree that the good Lord was with you and you did not pay the ultimate price for David’s decision to drink and drive. As far as opinions on David we also have wide variances to how we feel towards David. But again there is one common thread. ONE DOES NOT DRINK AND DRIVE. Maybe we can put a positive spin on this...I think it would be great to get a 67-72 Chevy/GMC window decal of some sort that says "We enjoy our trucks so much we will not drink and drive"...or "Alcohol and 67-72 Chevy/GMC trucks don't mix"..."Real truck enthusiasts won't drink and drive"...."67-72 Chevy/GMC owners spell stupid DUI" These may be a bit lame but you can get the point. I think we all have common ground when it comes to drinking and driving. What do you think berencam?

My sympathy for your loss, and wishing you a speedy recovery. As to the drunk driver. Well, if you've had too much to drink, spend the night, call a cab, call a friend, call your mom. Heck, call me. I'd rather lose a couple hours sleep giving a buddy a ride home than go to his funeral. Get well soon.

Sorry to hear of this. I hope you have a speedy recovery. I have to say I haven't seen damage like that on one of these trucks before.

God bless you Bro. Seat belts are true. Sorry that the whole deal went down. You must have a blessed reason to tell us all. Listen, if God is talking to you then keep the belt on. Sorry to have to respond to a near death collision story. I must say that your truck was very solid in its response. Your belt kept you alive. Love from me BRO.

Get well soon. Trucks come and go and you will have a number of them in your life.

You have a 2nd chance that a lot of people don't get. Make the best of it.

I think I will start a thread on the General Discussion site and see if we can get it rolling. Hey texanidiot25...would there be a way to get an outline of berencam truck as part of the decal. This would be a great movement as part of our group.

not trying to hijack this thread, but do any of the people who made comments about how it's a good thing he wasn't driving a "honda or toyota" or other import REALLY think it would have been safer in a Cavalier, a Lumina an Escort or a Taurus. or some other POS American car. ALL NEW CARS HAVE THIN SHEET METAL. woulldn't have made a damn bit of difference.

A DRUNK DRIVER HIT SOMEONE, KILLED HIMSELF AND INJURED ANOTHER PERSON. WHAT EACH PERSON WAS DRIVING REALLY DOESN'T MATTER.
