Re: Project... Rusty but Trusty
Yep , Napa gold oil filter . In the walmart parking lot picks . I see the hood and tops of the doors have some surface rust . There is a thread in the project section were a guy had the same situation and used 4 to 1 hot water and CLR mixed to remove the rust then waxed it . Here they are : charity case . Kept the patina without the rust .

Re: Project... Rusty but Trusty
Just thought I'd see if there was any interest in it?
It's getting close but is sitting for a few more days. Every once and a while I need to go work and make a little money. Anyway. This is a part time project Spray-Bomb and I have been working over the course of several months. In between working and other projects. Stock 250/six (thanks to HotRod80), a turbo manifold we cut and modified ourselves, I am modding an old 400cfm AFB for blow thru and using a clifford alum intake. Not sure the turbo is going to be sized even close to properly, but have a few others to mix and match to get closer if needed. This is just for fun and to learn a bit. If you look on the previous page, there are some pics from last year showing it with a intercooler. For right now I am going no intercooler until I get it dialed in with low boost. So far I have less than three hundred in turbocharging it. Lee

Re: Project... Rusty but Trusty
Another shot
We don't have a LOT left. Hook up some gauges, including a boost gauge. Spray didn't have a temp gauge and that's part of the reason the other engine (integrated head) cratered. Finish the chain brace Do the mods to the AFB and hook up fuel line and throttle cable Fabricate PCV system Glue up, sand and paint the intake piping Hook up the boost referenced fuel pump Run the oil supply line to the turbo (the drain is run) Still have to figure out what I'm going to do to control the internal wastegate. (this is the biggie). The stock won't work with the way it is clocked Get an air filter for it (to start it will just get a cone type directly on the turbo) Finish the clutch linkage and adjust the clutch (had to have clearance for the exhaust) Finish the exhaust (only has 2.5" downpipe currently) Bleed the brakes (had to re-route the six brake lines, V-8 would have worked) maybe a few other small items Re-install front sheet metal, radiator and battery, etc Then a few maintenance items.......... and go for a test drive! A good day or so would get most of it. But is back om the "wait" list right now. DO you already have the 6.5 turbo? If so, what number? Is the shop truck a 250? I "think" mine will work, just not as well as it could. I think it is a bit small on the compressor side to flow well at higher rpms. I am NO turbo expert. But learning. Time will tell. Lee

Re: Project... Rusty but Trusty
Very interested in this turbo build. I'm not familiar with blow through carbs, but it sounds fairly simple as simple as a turbo project is....
Lovin the RBT theme through and through!

Re: Project... Rusty but Trusty
yeah, I am interested in this as well. i would love to do a turbo six in my blazer since it originally came with a 6 cyl. Where'd you get the manifold and do you have links to the blow-thru carb you mention?

Re: Project... Rusty but Trusty
We made the exhaust manifold from an original 250 manifold and grafted on the turbo portion of an GM exhaust from a 6.5 turbo diesel. Not sure how long it will last, but braced it well. If it doesn't last I will build one from a flange and weld ells.
There was some exhaust manifold being sold on ebay a few years back but don't know now. TLowe on the inliners international bulletin board (http://inliners.org/) was importing some a while back also. They looked quite nice but were out of my price range at 400 or so. You might contact him. The blow thru carb mods were from the theturboforums. http://theturboforums.com/ They have info on both holleys and carter/edelbrocks. I need to finish building my O2 sensor (JAW), and do a few final plumbing details and then I could fire it up and start tuning. Been pretty busy for a unemployed person. lol Mine is just an effort to learn more about turbos etc. Hope it puts out 250 or so hp. There are a few out there with more than 500 from a 250-292. That would be a blast. Leo Santucci has a good book on modding the 250 - 292 and there are lots of books on turbos. Most recommend Corky Bell's. Lee

Thanks for the nice words. Its fun to drive a old beater pickup. You don't have to worry about scratches etc. Turbos have interested me for several years, finally decided to try my hand at one DIY. I am sure it won't be as good as a professional setup, but it's fun to me. Hope to get back on it toward the end of summer. Lee

I think I could handle that. Hopefully it is a video of a success and not a big oily spot. Only time will tell.

Re: Project... Rusty but Trusty
Well it's not dead. The shop has been full of SprayBomb's projects, but he started cleaning up today.
I am going with a SLC DIY wideband from 14.7 ( http://www.14point7.com/SLC-DIY.php ) and I've assembled and tested it. I need to weld the bung in the downpipe. I'm getting a temperature probe off ebay and will weld a bung in for it to read EGT. And I will be able to datalog!!!!!!! Have a few other things on my santa list. Anyway I hope to get it pushed back in the shop soon and get it going. The biggest short term project I have is building a bracket and mounting the wastegate actuator. When I re-clocked the turbo the old one no longer fits....... so I ordered a new one and need to get it hooked up. Lots of little stuff to do trim the inner fender remount the front sheet metal bleed the brakes Get a longer speedo cable Get the factory gauges working Get the wipers working Fab fuel line from pump to carb (mega squirt on hold right now) Lots of little things to fix from it sitting so long. And that's just to get it drivable, not good, just good enough And lots of tuning to keep from detonating the engine. I really would like to get it going soon.

Re: Project... Rusty but Trusty
That sounds like a good idea, but getting the outside nice is a bit in the future. Need to get it driving first.

Re: Project... Rusty but Trusty
I really thought I would be back working on this by now.
Santa brought me a few things for RBT, but it still sits outside waiting patiently. Weather has really been off (cold, wet, snowy, rainy, etc) lately and seems it will continue for a while. I do hope to get back on it soon. Maybe by the the beginning of next month. I would really like to hear it run SOON!
