Re: Project: Hot Rod Hauler (HRH) Build Up
The brackets are from glock35ipsc and not sure if he is still selling them. I got them from another board member. Here was the last link for selling them. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=340444
The rotors are mid '90's Impala SS (and other models) and calipers are early to mid 90's Camaro/Firebird.

Re: Project: Hot Rod Hauler (HRH) Build Up
[quote=chevy_mike;3509063]Also got down to the junk yard and picked up a glove box door, which I will use for my dash/gauges build up and scored a serpentine belt setup from a 4.3L S10 Blazer. I liked this over the other ones I found, since it doesn't have the smog pump bracket built in and looks a little cleaner because of that. BTW, anyone looking to pull one of these from the junk yard, bring a steering pump pulley remover. I had to call my dad to bring me one.
Mike what junk yard are you going to? Ecology in Chula Vista?

Re: Project: Hot Rod Hauler (HRH) Build Up
Well, I haven't been able to spend as much time as I would have liked to, working on HRH. I have done a few things to I am making progress. As seen above, I picked up a serpentine belt setup but found that earlier heads, the passenger side is not tapped for the third bolt the bracket uses. I made up a jig to allow me to drill and tap the extra hole I needed. It was a little scary since I wasn't sure if I would end up hitting the water jacket. Some careful measuring and I got the hole done. The hole in the bracket matched right up so that was a relief.
I have also started to remove the old paint and scuff up the block for a repaint. I still haven't decided on what color I am painting it. I have gotten the intake, timing cover and oil pan off and have ordered a bunch of parts from Summit Racing. I found the timing chain with a 1/2" of slop, so I am replacing it. For good measure, the oil pump is also getting replaced. Soon I should have it painted and start putting all the new parts on. Jig for drilling extra hole Tapping the hole Getting the old paint off Going to start removing the intake That's it for now. Hopefully by the end of the week I should have my new parts.

Good job on tapping the hole! It's always a little scary when doing it on a motor! Any rebuild plans for the motor?

As for a rebuild, not at this point. It was running fine and is "suppose" to have about 60,000 miles on it. Basically resealing everything and replacing the timing set because of some slop and oil pump because doesn't hurt when it's this far apart. If I end up having problems down the road, I have another engine in the garage I can us.

Yeah those things just keep on ticking! It will look a whole lot different once you paint it I am sure.

Re: Project: Hot Rod Hauler (HRH) Build Up
Things have been moving, though slowly. I ordered up a bunch of parts from Summit Racing. I have been pulling off the tin work and intake, to get ready for new stuff. When I pulled the timing cover, I found about 1/2" of play in the chain so I added that to the list. Ordered an Edelbrock double roller timing set. As noted in some book and the instructions, on later model block (this is a Goodwrench 350 engine) you have to clearance the upper oil galley casting. Nothing a little die grinder didn't take care of. I taped up everything before grinding.
I also cleaned up the block with Acetone and scuffed it up for painting. Finally decided on Chevy Orange for the color. Generic but works regardless of what color I end up painting the truck. I was going to put my aluminum finned oil pan on but after thinking about it, once the engine is dropped into the frame, you almost can't see the oil pan. Why waste this nice pan when no one will really see it. I'll use it on my Model A sedan project. I also picked up a new Mildon oil pump and drive shaft. Figured it was easier to replace it while apart now than deal with problems down the road. Also a new Edelbrock fuel pump, ARP stainless steel bolt kit, a new harmonic damper and a bunch of misc. stuff. Figure I would replace almost all the gaskets so hopefully no leaks. Also swapping on my new manifold and new water pump for the serpentine belt setup. The other thing I was trying to decide on was which valve covers I wanted to use. Since I am not using the finned oil pan, I am going to use the M/T ones, since the other ones go better with that pan. Figure I will use them in the sedan when the time come. Well, I hope to have things buttoned up over the next week or so. Enjoy the pics. I just love new parts The area on the block, clearanced for the timing chain Installing the double roller timing set Installed and block painted now New water pump and timing cover installed. ARP bolts other than the one needed for the serpentine bracket. M/T valve covers I bought a few years back off Ebay. I am thinking of having Hot Rod Hauler machined into the flat area. The other valve covers I have. I was going to paint the area inside the fins orange and polish the top of the fins. Decided these are going on my Model A sedan build.

Those covers would be sweet with the truck name machined in them. Looking good!

I like the idea of having the name machined in the covers. Do you have a link or pics to the model A sedan??

Re: Project: Hot Rod Hauler (HRH) Build Up
Nope, nothing really. It has been under a cover (just the body) for the last three years. It is also my reminder of "be careful of what you bid on, on Ebay. You might just win it!". I won the body (6" chopped) on Ebay, not thinking I would win it and it was located in Texas. I ended up flying out, getting a rental truck and driving it back to San Diego. Earlier this year, I happend to come across someone on Craigslist selling all the fenders, frame, hood and misc. parts that I picked up cheap. Think I will be doing a full fender build, more of a traditional hot rod NOT a street rod. Got to get the truck done first.

Re: Project: Hot Rod Hauler (HRH) Build Up
So, a little Photoshop work and I now have "engraved" valve covers. Man if it was only so easy! I think I am going to need to find a machine shop that can do this for me. Anyone have any good shops in San Diego that could do this?

Re: Project: Hot Rod Hauler (HRH) Build Up
Well, tonight did not go very well. I was set to install the intake manifold and problem one was, I couldn't find the almost new can of form-a-gasket so I had to use some old RTV. Okay no biggie I thought.
Got the new intake gaskets on, got the intake dropped on square so all I need to do is get all the bolts started and tighten everything up. Well, that is when everything went to crap. I had picked this new manifold up from someone on Craigslist and from what I can tell, it's a Performance Power (or knock off) manifold. I get one bolt started and went to install one on the other side. Hummm..... bolt hole is not lining up. Okay, lets try another one. Nope, no luck. Crap!!!! If I get one side to line up, the other side is off about 1/8-3/16" off. No amount of "wiggling" will get them all to line up. Needless to say, I pulled everything back off. Man I should know better then to buy no name stuff. Okay, off to Summit to buy a new manifold. Get a Edelbrock EPS picked out. Go to check out, put in the info, credit card number, etc. and freakin' Summit's website goes down. I can't get to any page from them. I'm done for tonight. Just needed to vent. Someone does not want me working with intakes today, so I'll try my order again tomorrow. Doesn't look like I will have my parts for the weekend. Sometimes you just can't win...

Re: Project: Hot Rod Hauler (HRH) Build Up
Thanks for the words guys. I know this is all part of building anything. Heck, years ago (many, many years ago) I would have beaten the holy crap out of it, thrown it, etc., etc. As I grew older, I finally figured out that when problems come up, just walk away and come back another time.
What I can't believe is the SBC has been around for 50+ years and they can't get the darn holes drilled in the right locations! I just throw it on the shelf and maybe one day I'll mess around with slotting the holes a little. I do have to say that I am really hating anything made in China. I swear they have zero quality control. You just never know what you might get. In the end I am glad I am supporting an American made product and have even been to the Edelbrock factory for a tour. Well, got the parts order this morning. Since they are shipping from Sparks, NV, I actually "might" have them tomorrow. I have seen one day turn around. Fingers crossed.

Re: Project: Hot Rod Hauler (HRH) Build Up
As luck would have it, the new intake showed up late Friday night. I was able to install it and it dropped right on. Every bolt lined up perfectly. I also installed the carb, a Edelbrock 1405 manual choke. I picked it up off Craigslist from a guy who only used it a couple months before his engine blew. After he had a new engine he put a larger Holley carb on. This thing is like brand new. Paid $50 for it.
