Re: '77 3+3 C30 Dually - "The "Sled"
Deal fell through on the engine and trans. Well, actually, I pulled the plug on the deal. Went to take a look at it last night and it was in a million pieces, accessories were scattered all over the place, no acc. brackets, no emissions equipment (big no-no with the engine swaps in CA), harness was junk, and on top of all that, it was pulled out of an HD (another big no-no with the engine swaps in CA - can’t use a commercial engine in a light-duty application). On top of all that, I just didn’t exactly get the warm fuzzies from the seller. My gut told me something was wrong, so I walked.
Kinda bummed, but there will be others. |

Re: '77 3+3 C30 Dually - "The "Sled"
If the 454 fell through, how about a 6.0/4L80E swap?

Eh, a 6.0l is a little out of my price range, and to be honest, my mechanical comfort level. Primary factor is price.

Re: '77 3+3 C30 Dually - "The "Sled"
See, there's always another...sometimes two...
Got a line on two complete and running parts trucks. Both 3/4 ton Suburbans ('87 & '90). Both relatively local. Both with fuel injected big blocks. Both for under $1k. Trying to make something happen on the cheaper one tonight ('90). Down side is I'll still be on the lookout for a 4L80E, but the upside is I'll have a complete parts truck at my disposal to assist in successfully completing the TBI swap. Plus I can part it out when I'm done and likely recoup a big chunk of money. I was worried that buying an engine that's already been removed may result in a few missing parts here and there which adds to the nickle and dime effect. |

Re: '77 3+3 C30 Dually - "The "Sled"
Actually, I'm going to make a quick release for it so I can pin it to the top of my M101 trailer. That way when we go camping, I can put all the heavy stuff on the bottom and use the rack to hold stuff like bikes and whatnot.
For those who don't know, and M101 is a 3/4 ton military trailer. You can pick them up cheap and they work great for expedition-style off road trips. ...But I'll sell you some pretty sweet 16" chrome modular wheels with 4 unmatched tires. |

Re: '77 3+3 C30 Dually - "The "Sled"
....lol, no thanks. And I figured you would probably be using the rack. Just had to ask.

Re: '77 3+3 C30 Dually - "The "Sled"
I was pretty busy with non-truck related things this weekend, but I did manage to get the underside of my cab, leaf spring pack and Dana 70 painted on Saturday. I didn't get any pics (not that it's anything real exciting), but here's a few shots of the Thorley's I scored.
I bought them before I realized my parts truck doesn't have A.I.R., so I'll have to plug the ports, but still... |

Re: '77 3+3 C30 Dually - "The "Sled"
Needed to get the garage cleaned up today, but I did manage to make some headway on the Sled. Moved the frame over some and slid the cab into the garage so I could start working on it.
Happiness is a clean garage. |

Looks good! Keep it up. You are partly responsible for me trying to hunt down a good Square-bodied Crew Cab Dually.

Re: '77 3+3 C30 Dually - "The "Sled"
Been too damn hot to do anything on the truck lately, but I managed to get a little experimentation done in the interim.
I took another factory engine temp gauge and modified my cluster so I could fit it in the blank spot on the lower left. The plan is to use this as a trans fluid temp gauge. I still have to figure out how I’m going to designate it as the trans fluid temp (dry transfer decals, maybe?) versus engine coolant temp, but that’s a topic for another day. Pardon the crappy cell phone pic. |
