Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
The wire is the green/white stripe that is controlled by the PCM. It shows 12V when the key is turned on then 2 or 3 seconds later it shows none. I don't think this wire is a prime only but when the PCM knows the engine is running it continues power, I sure hope so anyway but maybe it's not sensing a grounded pump so it shuts down .If not, I will have more questions.
More progress tonight, harness work. I started wrapping the wires and doing a final check for power at all connections. Also I was able to bolt up my truck power steering hoses to the new pump. I have a later model quick ratio box in the truck now, the pressure hose had an adapter to mate with the older box and this fitting screwed right in to the new box without issue. When I fire the engine and it's leak free I am golden. The engine compartment is getting crowded

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
OK, very good thanks Jay
Yes, getting closer everyday. Today is more harness work, installing spark plugs and see if I get spark. There is fuel in the rails, maybe it will try to start even just for a second that would be exciting I dropped by a local auto wrecker yesterday looking for a stock air intake tube/MAF and a computer mount and came up empty handed so looks like I will either have to hit up the dealer or go to Oakdale or Riverbank to the truck salvage yards. They should have something for me. I will post back later with more progress....

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
Your right on the fuel pump wiring. The PCM triggers the relay for the fuel pump. Sorry. Yours is coming along nicely.

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
Thank you guys, more progress today. I pulled the dash apart and drilled a hole in the speedometer face to house the MIL light. I chose blue, suppose to be yellow but hey I would rather see a soothing blue light than a caution yellow
Also mounted and wired the data port under the dash, that looks OK but I do need it. Tonight too, I put spark plugs and wires on the engine, and I could not get spark while cranking. Scratching my head, I did have one coil broken so I did not install it on the valve cover. Well, I thought of Christmas tree lights pull one light none of them work. I will buy a new coil and try again. Here are pics of my progress.

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
Yes, this truck is a '71 with an early front clip.
Thank you Jay, I have 3 eyelet grounds, one at the alt mount and 2 that are bolted to the rear of each head. I will check those today, and I do not have the engine grounded to the chassis yet, that will get done as well. If anything is out of place I will get it fixed and try again. I do have voltage while cranking fYI Oh, another question, if I don't have all of the sensors plugged in yet would not the SES light pop on? Or does this come on only when it's all hooked up and running. I would think if I did not have everything hooked up yet it would go off.

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
I'm guessing it needs a little time on the clock, do to speak.
BTW, where do you have your ground cable from the battery fastened? |

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
OK, to explain what I am using to ground my SES light and dignostic port is body ground and not PCM ground wires, is this backwards do I need to ground through the PCM instead of the body. I know some of these sensors use PCM ground to function so I am in need of direction if anyone knows.
Also, my neg battery cable is grounded to the engine block. And the relay/fuse block is grounded to the engine as well, as I mentioned the sensors and coils/injectors all are getting 12V and 5V for the crank/cam sensors. I will keep working at this and shoot off an e-mail to the tuner Brendan and see what he says.

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
My diagram isn't very clear, but pretty sure the PCM supplies ground for the check engine light. Ground is ground, but make sure its a good ground. I have my ground running to the block and frame then separate wires from the frame to cab, bed and rad. support.

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
Thanks USMC, what I will do tomorrow is take the grounds for the data port and check engine light and connect them directly to the PCM ground wires that go into the harness and see if I get a check engine light.
If I don't I guess thats a good thing If I do, I have a cheap code reader I can plug in and see what's going on. On the other hand I still have to finish this up, don't know why I am so concerned just yet but that's me. More progress tomorrow on harness work and organization

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
No spark yet, but I still am missing a coil.
Here is what I have done so far for testing power and grounds for the coils. I pulled each coil harness connector apart on the valve cover and using a test light have power at the pink wire with touching the black wire in the same connector, have a light so that tells me there is a ground present at the coil harness. Same with each coil connector. If I am doing something wrong here please chime in Same with the crank sensor and cam sensor. SO, next is buy a coil and try again. Then see if there is a way to test the crank sensor for pulse. I cannot see RPM on the tach while cranking, but this may not be the way to check for this. The needle does jump when I turn the key but after that nothing. I am kind of frustrated, I would hate this if I was ready to fire it up but I am still a couple of weeks from that yet and want to figure this out.

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
IT RUNS
OK, can't wipe the smile from my face, and I do have to admit fault to all of this hassle.... When I put the harness on the engine, I was backwards a little bit on what side went to where so what I did by accident was plugged the cam sensor into the crank sensor and crank sensor into the cam. Gimmee a dunce cap, but this was all it was and when I pulled the harness back off and routed it right I cranked it (there is fuel in the rails) it actually idled for a few seconds before I shut it down. There is no oil in it yet, or exhaust manifolds so it's kinda loud Awesome , now off to getting the oil pressure adapter and putting oil and a filter on it so I can continue.

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
Thank you guys, I am very pleased to hear the engine fire
I did so much reading and research that my head hurts and in the end it was a simple mistake. Now off to fuel, intake and exhaust manifolds.

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
Congrats on getting it running! It sounded like you said it didn't have oil in it? How did you prime the oil pump? with grease in the housning? I guess the assembly lube protects all your bearings? Sure glad it was something simple getting it fired up.

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
The oil pump was greased and filled with oil before bolting it on, I will also be low load cranking the engine to get pressure on Tuesday. I also did a quick check on a compression test and the 3 cyl I did all had 210 psi sounds like alot for a LQ4 I need to poke around for factory specs on this.
I hope to see the manifolds and fuel pump soon, now getting anxious to drive it. I still need to order the oil pressure adapter fom Summit and my VSS pulse generator as well so the PCM knows the truck is moving.

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
Today my manifolds and fuel pump shipped, I should be getting this FedEx by Wed/Thurs and placing my Summit order for stuff and get that by Wed.
This week should be a good one and maybe by the weekend the truck will move under it's own power once again

When you say "under it's own power" do you mean, possibly burn-out worthy?! With a pic of course.
