Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!

I also got the tach I will be using for my truck. Will be adding the 80lb oil gauge....and possibly a vacuum gauge....haven't decided on that yet....

I'll check to see if my repop carpet has them. I'll let you know.
I am very curious if they are available repop as well.

Does anyone know if the gastank cardboard cover is needed to place under the carpet? Or is the carpet the only thing covering the gastank?

Yes, you still want the cardboard cover. Otherwise the gas can stain the carpet around where the lines go in at. These brass clips aren't reproduced to my knowledge. Let me know if you find out otherwise. Did you happen to get any measurements of the holes yet? Trevor

I got it from the Cheyenne super man. It was the only one he had at the moment...but watch the board and ebay....I almost bought one off ebay the other day that had a minor blemish on the face but was super nice otherwise...sold for 375 buy it now before I made up my mind...so deals are still out there....

Great info. I appreciate it.

I will make a simple diagram of the measurements and post them in a bit...

Ok, I checked my repop carpet. It attaches to the rear of the cab via 4in-wide plastic "U" clips (sewn on carpet edge), which attach along the lip of the top edge of the gas tank. But you could use the brass oblong rings instead of the plastic clips if someone comes up with a source.

My repop carpet came with the plastic clips also. They work fine. First time I've seen the brass units.

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!

Yeah, my repop carpet came with the plastic clips to drape over the gas tank. The brass sets I have came from original bucket seat optioned trucks. Trevor

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!

Well, the holes are kinda all over the place. No real uniform spacing. From the door edge (with gasket removed from the passenger door over to the first hole is 1 1/2", then 2 3/4 to the next hole, 3 9/16 to the next, 3 1/2, 7 1/2, 7 7/8, and then 8 5/16 which puts us lined up directly over the center hole in the gas tank upper bolt holes. Next hole is 6 7/16 over, then 7 3/4, 7 5/8, 7 5/8, 4 1/4, and then 1 3/8 puts us at the driver's door edge.

THey are mostly all 1 1/8" from the lower edge of the cab but some are up to 1/2" higher. Wonder if this is just factory quality control or lack thereof....it appears there was glue all the way up to under the rear window gasket at some point. Maybe a later cover someone installed or would that have been that way at the factory?

Anyone have a picture of the factory cover installed with the grommets?

Here's my rough diagram

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!

The carpet actually folds and then the brass clip is screwed into the lapped piece of carpet behind the overlapping piece. Thus still giving it a look similar to the new repops, but it sits higher of course. You don't see the brass clips once installed. Trevor

On a side note, thanks for the measurements, and you measured them from the edge of where the door meets that cab pillar (where the weatherstrip starts normally) right? Trevor

Yes, from the edge of the door. I guess since they weren't seen the measurements being off doesn't seem as weird... I'd still like to see it installed...and I guess the glue on my back cab wall was from a later re-do....

Picking up another Turbo 400 tonight. Supposedly a recent rebuild with a good stock torque converter. We will see when it's torn into

There's a nice piece of trivia. I can't quite imagine how it is out of sight though. What is visible - the screw head?

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!

Got the Turbo 400 (which turns out later to be a 350 DOH! ). much cleaner than the first one

Still going to degrease it and then it goes to the tranny guy to go through and re-seal. Picked up my rear slider today. Pictures this evening.
