Re: D60 Front Brake Upgrade
Nothing big... The axles are under the truck now, but only partially assembled. Hope to have it running in a couple weekends from now. I got the CaptainFab bracket powdercoated and received the flex lines from Kore3. Need to run new hardline as I removed all the old stuff.

Re: D60 Front Brake Upgrade
ok.. some not so good news.. the H2 hummer wheels don't clear the Dodge 3500 calipers. Its only a fraction off but it rubs... I could grind the edge of the caliper, but mine are already powder coated. I wanted aftermarket wheels, but just not yet. I wanted to stay with 17" rims but may need to go to 18" for clearance...

Re: D60 Front Brake Upgrade
It would only need some smoothing of the outer edge of the caliper.... maybe an 1/8 inch. If I didnt already powdercoat my calipers, I would have just ground them down for clearance. I wish I had a Dodge rim to test fit, but they still want big money on CL for them....

Re: D60 Front Brake Upgrade
It was the kit. Its only cross over, not high steer. I was originally just going to use the 4" block on the steering arm so I built my own lower tie bar. The arms are really nice pieces and I like the springless design. The crossover steering bar has a bend and I'm not sure why, but I'm still assembling.

Re: D60 Front Brake Upgrade
Appreciate the offer, but the expense is not worth it. Once the truck is runnig and driving, I can take it and test fit a Dodge rim.... just to see if it makes a difference.

Re: D60 Front Brake Upgrade
How much lift is on your rig? I want to go with crossover but I only have 2" of lift. ORD says a minimum of 4". It looks like it will work to me but I'd like to be sure. They say the bend is put in for '73 and up trucks to clear the engine crossmember. It looks like it wouldn't be an issue with 67-72s but I don't want to waste the $$$. What do you think?

Re: D60 Front Brake Upgrade
OK. Well I feel a little silly....
I went to test the Raceline wheel on the passenger side and it fit, but barely. So close that I went and assembled the driver side (I hadn't tried this before.) I tride to mount the Raceline wheel and it wouldn't fit over the wheel studs. The problem was I upgraded to 5/8" wheel studs and holes in the rim was too small. It had no allowance for being 27+ years old and slightly off center. So I grabbed the Hummer rim and .. TA DA... it fit the driver side, no problem.... 1/16" celarance between the caliper and rim.... So now I was thinking, what the hell is wrong with the other side.... I disassembled the passenger side brakes, then re-assembled making sure everything was aligned. There is a small amount of adjustment/play in the hole that the caliper mounting bolt goes through. I test the Hummer wheel again, and IT FIT.... again only 1/16" clearance, but it clears... as long as there is no deflection in my braket, I should be fine... Another note about the Raceline wheels. You have to use aftermarket slpined lug nuts. The fit was so tight that you couldn't even get a thin wall socket on the lugnut. Now that may be beacuse I upgraded to 5/8 wheel studs and the OD of the larger lugnut take up more space, but just and FYI. Last edited by mcmlxix; 12-24-2012 at 04:00 PM. Reason: added pics ... |

Re: D60 Front Brake Upgrade
Id be concerned about the expansion of the aluminum rim and the caliper myself anyway

Re: D60 Front Brake Upgrade
Sounds like winner! i wouldn't worry about deflection. the action of the caliper is strait horizontal, so there is no force at angle to deflect the bracket. if there is, it would indicate a frozen caliper slide.

Re: D60 Front Brake Upgrade
I build enough old Kawasaki motorcycles to know how much aluminum will expand/contract in different temps,Id be really carefull about having enough clearance to allow for it.

Re: D60 Front Brake Upgrade
Mcmlxix, did you happen to have measured the inside of the wheel? I'd also like to go to bigger front brakes on my D60, but I have 16.5" H1 wheels. They're actually pretty big inside, something like 15 3/4".
Now that I'm taking a closer look at the inside of your wheels, I see they are pretty big, too.... |
