Now that Kyle is done jacking around making other people's stuff all beautiful and shiny, he's back on my stuff.



He's begun installing the notch kit I got from Scott's by cutting the frame so that the upright pieces will fit flush with the frame sides rather than overlapping as they would if you bought the notch already welded together.

You can also see in the pics how Kyle has determined that we do not need to raise the notches any higher than what you see here. Since we are running a coil-over setup, the clearance between the axle and frame doesn't require as much room as a bagged setup where laying frame might be the primary objective. This also allows for the bottom part of the notch to be welded to the top of the frame, which should make the frame sturdier.





Decided to go with a 12" wide wheel on the back. Since the notch requires bed modification, and since the Scott's setup places all the suspension bits inside the frame rail, it seemed like a perfect opportunity to stuff some steamrollers back there. So the axle is getting shipped off to be shortened 2", and then Kyle's going to build up a bulletproof rear end with a posi, new gears, seals and axles.

I really like how you guys are doing the notch, much better than a bolt in and not overlapping will keep the lines clean. Very nice! Kyle seems to be the master of all trades with these trucks eh.

Well Mark, we all know what happens to plans. The thing is you have to be ready to adapt to circumstances. It turns out that the need to make changes to get the desired ride height opened the door to do something else I wanted to do - get a wheel with a fat lip in the back.


And yeah, I did notice that Lucy somehow manages to sneak in.

Me too! Choosing colors and wheels are two of the toughest things for me to decide. I don't know why wheels are so tough because they're so easy to change, you know? Since Short Stuff is going to have those 13" black mofo Wilwood brakes all the way around, I don't want to hide them. With a six week lead time on wheels these days, I can't wait too long to get them ordered.

One of the goals from the start was to have a really clean frame, and this is going to go a long way towards that. Kyle is one of those rare kind of individuals that can do anything he sets his mind to do, and do it at a high level. What's cool about him is he doesn't brag about it. I don't know how many times I've said to him "You can do that too?". Up till now, the only other thing that impressed me about paint and body guys was their ability to come up with excuses for why it's going to be another month before the job is finished.

No cheeseheads in our family tree that I know of.

I owe Justin props for his suggestions on this build. The smoothed in notches was his idea. He's done some high dollar builds, well north of the six figure mark, and he generously shares his time to learn about what you're trying to accomplish and then help you get there. Great resource to have involved in the build for sure.

That frame build up look s awesome. Far more advanced then I am looking to do, I have to admit a little jealousy on the beautiful front setup. Hmmmmm maybe a phase six for my project to come....hahaha Keep with the updates and pics. Thanks for sharing.

Believe me I know about trying to make a decision on wheels. I ordered a set I thought I wanted, waited 4 weeks then wasn't happy when I got them. So I sold them and now will be waiting 6 more weeks for the next set. Hopefully I'm happy with the next set. I also know all too well with tying to choose a paint color. I have changed my mind 75 times. For now it is going to be red but we will see

Yeah, I read your thread about the wheel change. You went from great to greater. It was interesting how you looked at them real time and decided they weren't for you. Nothing like looking them over in person. That's one reason like going to events like Good-guys where you can see them on cars and in the vendor displays. You made a good choice with the Retros. I've seen Kyle's and they look even better in person than the pix. I'm sure you'll be pleased with them. I ordered a set of Pentia's from Intro a couple months ago for Tom, and it took every bit of six weeks to get them.

Unfortunately there are no goodguys events around me to go to and most of the cruises and shows don't have cars/trucks with anything larger than 17" wheels. And even at that they are all torq thrust anyway. I have to try to go off of this forum and google images to see what different wheels look like and then try to make a decision. I have like 10 pictures of Kyle's old truck saved to look at when I was making my decision. I'm happy to hear that they look even better in person.

The axle has been sent out to get shortened 2" on each side. When it gets back, Kyle is going to reposition the brackets inboard just a bit so the 4 bar brackets can't hit the frame. Running coil-overs, it wouldn't be an issue but if I made the change at some point to ShockWaves I wouldn't want to use the bracket for a bumpstop.

Kyle is going to build up the rear with new Moser axles, a 3.73 Richmond gear set and an Eaton posi.

The rear will be out a week or so because the axles have to be custom made. Can't believe people don't stock 2" narrowed, 30 spline, 5x5 axles for a 12 bolt. When it gets back, the stuff hits the whirling blades so pix will come then.

The nice thing about Moser is that you will have the axles right about a week's time. They are pretty darn efficient over there.

Glad you asked that.
This will be stronger than an overlap because the insides are gusseted, and the inside along the top of the frame rail is welded also - an area that you wouldn't be able to access if the kit was welded on as an assembled kit. I'll post pictures later that show the additional measures Kyle took as he put it together. Believe me, it's plenty stout. Certainly more stout than bolt on notches, which I've not seen fail and they're very popular.

This truck won't be hauling around engine blocks, but it is going to carve some corners. Show and go I guess you might say.
