I painted it in a carport at a rental duplex. Turned it into a spray booth with tarps and a heater! |

Wow. Putting these in here makes me sad that I didn't keep at least ONE of them. Maybe this project will be the one that sticks.

Re: 1980 Stepside Build... My first build thread
I was driving the K5, and 4 friends were in the truck with me. Young and stupid and more balls than brains. Truck stalled near the top of a very steep, very long hill, and started rolling backwards, bounced sideways, and tumbled down the hill. Came to rest on its roof near the bottom of the hill after rolling 8-10 times (as estimated by other friends who were watching from outside). One passenger lost a contact lens, one got a small cut on his forehead, and I had some cuts and bruising on my left shoulder from where the roof was crushing down on me. The worst injury to result from this wreck was another friend who sprained his ankle jumping out of his toyota pickup when he saw us start to roll - and he was only a spectator.
The wreck scarred me for a long time. This happened around 1988 or 89, and I couldn't tolerate being in a 4x4 off road until about 2005. We were extremely fortunate to have survived. |

Re: 1980 Stepside Build... My first build thread
Finished the rust repair tonight. Had to patch the inside and outside skin on the lower rear corner of the drivers door. PO had used about 1/4" of bondo to cover up the Swiss cheese.
I forgot to take my phone out to the shop tonight, so no pics yet. I will post some tomorrow. Unless I find some more that I don't already know about, the rust repair is done! |

And back on the truck with more of my temporary satin black!
Both doors are now re hung with new hinge pins and bushings, as well as new strikers. It's pretty amazing how much better they close now. |

And a view of the repair on the inner skin. Forming this piece from a flat sheet was quite a challenge!

Re: 1980 Stepside Build... My first build thread
I have been searching locally for a replacement spring for my drivers door hinge. So far I haven't been able to find one. While sweeping up some of my mess on the shop floor today, I found the missing piece of my spring!
So I welded it back together and installed it. Keeping the low buck theme alive! |

Thanks Elco! I have now fixed all of the rust that I know about. Hopefully there won't be any surprises when I am prepping for paint.
