67 SWB First Build

Dang tailgate is taking longer than I figured. Had an hour this weekend to cut out the handle relocate. I was hoping that the kit I bought would be a flush mounted patch but turns out it is meant to bolt in. Will possibly try to modify it or at a minimum weld it in instead of using the bolts.
Bow is definitely less noticable than before.

New handle location. Also a few small patches I need to finish welding from needing access with hammer and dolly.


Goal is to get this and my floor in some primer by end of summer. I'll hopefully be done working out of town by then and have more shop time

All this work is going to pay off. That tailgate is looking good sir. Interested to see how you deal with the bolt in handle relocate.

Friday night I finished up welding the tailgate holes. Spent Saturday morning getting everything prepped and then spraying primer for the tailgate and cab floor. Had to spend a little time with the DA getting rid of some surface rust.

Tailgate prepped for primer.

Floor in primer. Will eventually get a sound deadener installed. Next is to flip the cab.

Tailgate in primer. Pretty sure I'm going to bolt the handle relocate in.

Misc. Items

Starting slinging mud on the tailgate. Fingers crossed all that effort will show at the end.


Ran out of time to make a lot of progress. Hopeful to hit it hard the next couple of weekends.

Not a lot of progress. Finally moved back home after an out of town job for work all summer. It's been a busy week back getting caught up on things a neglected around the house. Managed to squeeze an hour in the shop here and there. Finished with the body filler and now onto the skim coat and 80grit.

Still can't believe I have been working on the dang tailgate for over 6 months

Ouch, I feel like a selfish jackwagon lol. Well maybe not that bad. My wife is dealing with a lot right now. She will be getting a vacation when I finish my truck to say the least . That tailgate is gonna be sweet when you finish scurry. Can't wait to see it done!

I decided it was time to switch gears. The tailgate still needs some work. It's far from perfect, but hopefully it'll do the job.

Set the tailgate aside and started mudding my driver door. I got it roughed in for the time being. I won't finish it up until I hang the doors again.

Last weekend I had some buddies over and took advantage of it. I had them help me flip the cab onto the firewall. From there I started cleaning up the bottom of the cab. I had some random pin holes to fill from when I was doing floor patches. Also removed some old seam sealer where the floor pan overlaps the firewall. New seam sealer went in right behind it after it was cleaned up. Welded up driver rocker/cab corner as well.

The previous cab owner welded up the bench seat frame holes and had used a different seat. I plan on using a bench seat from a 68, so I was able to remove the welds and run a thread cutter through the bracket nuts to get it cleaned up and functional again.

Lastly, I put a couple coats of epoxy primer on it. I realize it's not perfect and my welded seams standout. I figure it won't matter too much because it'll never really be looked at. I'll throw some undercoating on later this weekend or early next week before I get the cab flipped back over. That should help mask the weld seams.

Ah man, no lizard skin?? I'm just kidding, looks great. How did that sem brand undercoating do?

I want to know. Because the floor pan I purchased re-stamped
need a little cover up or reweld.

I know... I do plan on using it on the interior. This stuff worked pretty good. Seams pretty tough and is supposed to help with sound.
Didn't you use lizard skin? How much would you recommend I'll need for the interior of the cab?

It covered them up alright. I could have done a bit more grinding but I was getting ancy to get it coated

Was able to spend a little time in the shop this weekend. My brother and I did some brewing in Friday. Afterwards he helped me flip my cab back.

Spent yesterday night hanging the doors and slinging some mud. I'm liking the looks of the gaps so far. Will hopefully finish the last of the glaze on the doors and cab by the end of the week.

Also got my engine block back out. Cleaned up the little bit of surface rust and started gathering all the goods. Going to take the crank, pistons and rods to an engine shop to get them balanced in the next week or two.

1 gallon got me 3 coats underneath cab and 3 coats inside cab. On the inside I shot it up the firewall to underside of dash, and all the way up the back of cab. I shot it in the cab corners too way down inside and all the way up. And all this with the gun nozzle almost all the way out spraying the most material.

So 1/2 a gallon would be enough for inside your truck if they sell that size.

Looking good seeing those doors go back on. I'm finishing my cab right now about to spray it soon. Ready to see the doors go back on too....

Pulled the trigger on the lizard skin. Should be here later this week. Planning on doing the floor and inside the doors. Thanks for the qty 👌🏽

Waiting on supplies to come in this week to finish the interior floor for the sound deadener. Also need to get my flywheel to get the engine components balanced.

I continued on the sanding of doors. Looking pretty solid. I'll probably have my dad up for a day some weekend to 100% the cab for polyester primer. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

Decided to get going on my grill. I had two 67/68 grills, one was in a bit better condition than the other. I've seen on other projects where the rivets are removed for the parking light frame in the grill and swapped out for the smooth frame. I'm going to give it a go!

Little more progress in the right direction. Lizard skin came in this week so I spent time prepping the cab floor. Put two coats on the floor and ran it up the firewall and back. I bought the paint gun for it and it sprayed real nice. Easy to clean up too. Finished up the ceramic coat today. Overall the whole process was pretty simple. Hope it works like it's supposed to!

Finished stripping the grill and its components. Also did the same thing for the cowl panel. Cleaned up the rust on the backsides and applied por 15. Today i through down a couple coats of epoxy primer on them.

Sound deadener sprayed on floor and firewall

Ran it up the back

Finished off with ceramic coating next day
