Re: Daverods project 66

It runs I'm thinking at first I had the dist. in right but it was one tooth off. I had it running but not very good. I thought it was my plugs so I changed my plug gaps back to what they were orginally. It was still backfiring so I pulled the dist. and turned it 180. When I did that I put my wires back on counterclockwise., thats when the real trouble begain. Dumb a$$. Here I thought I was being smart by taking a picture of everything before I began the swap. I must have check the order 20 times 153624. Oh well, learned some stuff and its running. Tomorrow I weld up the exhaust and go burning around. I did'nt really want to go sledding today anyway. I was still sore from my wipeout last weekend.

Re: Daverods project 66

you could always do the thumb on the #1 plug hole trick for a quick check, wherever the distributor head is sitting at will be your #1, and redo your wiring from there. i've done this countless times and works fine.

When you do it that way how do you know if it's on the compression or exhaust stroke. Does it only blow air on the compression stroke? It seems that your dist. could still be 180 off?

Got my exhaust welded up. Lots easier to weld nice clean new metal together. Need to go buy some tips

Made the identical mistake on my '283': Confused exhaust stroke with compression - until I used a compression gauge on #1.

Piece-of-cake after that and the little motor fired right off.

Mac.

Does it still blow air out the hole on the exhaust stroke?

Yes - just not at the velocity of the compression.

Yeah - I almost took my valve cover off to confirm both valves were closed, but after getting them sealed just the way I wanted - I didn't want to mess with it and went with the compression gauge, while looking at the harmonic balancer marks.

And now I'm looking for a 47-53. Found a few but they were mostly rust. Damn, page three, you did have some catching up to do. Where you in a induced coma? Glad to see you back.

yes, air is released on the compression stroke.

Just because air comes out the hole you don't know if it on the compression or exhaust stroke. You could put your dizzy in and it could 180 out. I like the compression gage idea, keeps you from taking the valve cover off to see what stroke your really on.

Re: Daverods project 66

A good way to tell is remove the valve cover, and rock the engine at the timing mark. Look at #1 rockers, if intake and exhaust are rocking also that's #1. That is if I remember that right....

Re: Daverods project 66

Put my rubber door seals on and got my mat in. Don't know what I'm going to do about the peal and seal? Thing runs super. Sounds great, not to loud untill you get on. So much for the paint on the headers. I have my timing set at 4?
