MY 1971 Jimmy Build Thread

Here are some pics from over the last few months. Again, not a lot of progress, but what the hell... I'm only one guy.

Here's some door work. This front corner has got to be one of the most prone spots of these trucks for rust. After I had the doors acid dipped, there were some small pinholes in this bottom corner that I started to pick at very gingerly. I then decided that I may as well cut the outer skin off and I couldn't believe what i saw. Wish I had a pic of it. The sheetmetal had de-laminated so bad and the rust was so heavy here that it would have rusted thru in no time had it been left alone. In the second and third pictures, you can see the bottomside of the inner support- you can never get to this spot without cutting the door open, so I POR 15'd it. Can't find a finished product picture, either. It will certainly never rust out again in my lifetime.

Here is the mint tailgate that I bought from John@thepier in March of 2010. Absolutely flawless gate... one of those that is taken off when a camper shell is put on. Can't get better than this one.

And here's where I stand today. I'm trying to conceive a plan to get the hood and cowl primed maybe early Wed morning. We have a dangerous heat warning here for Tues and Wed, s'posed to be in the mid to upper 90's, I guess. Too hot to want to be in the garage in the afternoon, so maybe I can get myself organized and shoot these things in the early AM hours on Wed, before it gets too hot. Supposed to have a high of 66 on Thurs, 59 on Fri and then 70 on Sat. WTF?

Doing good. The tailgate looks great. The weather up here is about the same, but maybe warmer. Heat index was about 105 today, dew point 70. I didn't spend much time out there either.

As far as painting goes, I decided to let the body shop do my truck paint. The process for my C-10 is this:

They painted and cleared the inside of the fenders and hood, then set aside.

They have the inside of the cab sanded, the jambs, the firewall, the windshield frame, the insides of the doors (they are mounted btw) and the door window frames.

They are taping off the cab top, door outer skins and the back of the cab, using the rain gutter as the tape line.

They figure they can spray the a pillar and door hinges pretty well like this. Next will be me getting the radiator support painted black (along with the battery tray and inner fenders). Then we will mount the fenders and hood and they will finish sanding the outside and spray all of that.

The bed is in the garage where I am taking care of some issues inside the bed, such as rust holes in the floor and building the gas filler. Once the cab and front clip are painted, we'll load the bed up and it will get sprayed, then set back on the frame and we'll call the paint done at that point outside of the wet sanding and polishing. Hoping to see paint inside the cab and firewall yet this week and I'm having issues waiting for that moment.

Ugh... a 70 degree dew point? And its only the sixth of June! Yay! Maybe I'll wait til things cool off some.

So, I guess this painting thing really needs to be a well laid out plan, huh? No holding the fender in one hand and spraying it with the other! Thanks for the tips. The more I think about it, the more it all comes together and makes sense.

You had the insides of the fenders painted, like the part that you can't see when the inner fender is on? I was wondering what to do in there... thought about just leaving it the EDP black. Would epoxy, at the very least, then paint be better?

Funny thing is, the body guy changes the plan as he moves forward, just like the rest of us. Doing a complete paint job inside and out is rare for most body shops, and as he works through it he changes how he wants to mask and spray depending on what he comes across in the process.

Example: decided to paint the door window frames inside and out at the same time because of how far they set in the door frame. Also decided to do around the outside of the windshield and just use the gutter for a tape line. Things like that.

The guys at the shop are working with the doors open in this weather and I come by and he tells me he wasn't smart enough to have a job like mine in the air conditioning and driving around all day. I can't say he's wrong.

Just went back through your thread again-and I'm going to mentally template my new front seat frame based on your pics (I have crappy carpet in mine currently, and I wanted to formulate a gameplan ahead of time). Your pics show pretty accurately where the stock seat belt bolt downs go, and seat frames themselves. I'm going to utilize as many of those as possible to mount some buckets with integrated shoulder belts.

...your work is top notch, makes me wish my couch wasnt so soft.

Not much of an update, more of a 'hey, I got new 15x10 rallys with nos caps and trim rings and want to show them off' post. I can't really afford it now, but I'm going to have to go out this week and put new tires on these rims... the no tire look is cool because the rims are awesome and its different, but it just aint the same.

Hey there, Tom. Nope not one single update to share. It's been waiting for me to come out in the garage and start some work, but I've actually been busy on my other project- my '63 Galaxie. I trade time between the two of them, but when I'm working on one of them, they seem to consume my time for a while.

Will share details when they come available. Actually thinking I may shoot paint on the Jimmy in the next few weekends... hopefully before Christmas. We'll see!

Thanks. I actually found them on craigslist. The date stamped on them is 7/27/93 and I think they came from Stockton Wheel.

Thanks. The light yellow truck in the beginning of the thread I bought off of eBay back in May of '09... what a disaster that thing was. Had some good pieces, but sooo much rust. I have nightmares about it sometimes. The ochre '72 I bought from Sharpie in Feb, '10. Basically two trucks making one. One day I'll get it finished.

Met a girl and married her sold the blazer after 2 years of inactivity. Fast forward My Son and I picked up a 72K/5 and drove 900miles from Oregon to Phx. AZ through the Mojave (in July) wrenched on it this weekend befor going to the Kiss concert thumbs up all around these rigs bring up memories with everyone who stops to talk. August 16th is our 20th anniversary and the knuckle I ripped off still hurts if I bump it.
