Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Are you still planning on getting a D60 for the front?

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Already got it. Picked up a dually D60 about a month and a half ago, got it tore down and am still in the process of cleaning and rebuilding it.
It's pretty rough but certainly salvageable, gonna need calipers, seals, and inner axles on both sides (inner seals wore pretty deep grooves), but the R&P and bearings look good.
Thought we'd need new rotors, but they cleaned up at 1.35".

We think so...it can't come quick enough though.

As much as we enjoy putting along with the original, now smoky, 235 (gallon of oil to every tank of gas)...it was wheezing pretty hard with this relatively light load!

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Very nice! This will be a killer rig! Now, I have a couple questions for you.

Did you build the diff covers?
What kind of paint did you use on the front axle? I've been using Krylon lately, and for the money it sucks. I switched over to VHT and it seems to be a better product for spray bomb.

Looks great! Id also like to know what kind of paint you used. Ive had good luck with rustoleum gloss black out of the can(gallon).

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Thanks, it's starting to come together. I almost don't want to take it down for the conversion...been enjoying it quite a bit using it like it is, but it's about that time. We're really hoping that we can get it in and out this winter and be running again by early spring.

I've had good luck with Rustoleum gloss black enamel (rattle can) and tend to use that most of the time.

Diff covers and spring plates were sourced from RuffStuff...lots of good parts there.

Are you going to rebuild the kingpins? I don't think I've ever had one apart that didn't have rusty bearings.

King pins feel smooth and tight, I'm kinda waiting to see if I'm going to go high steer on pass side with a 2wd box and cross over, or keep something close to the stock configuration. I'm leaning toward crossover and will check them out then.

That's a killer alternator mount, Rock. One more idea discovered on the pages of this forum. It's guys like you who make the rest of our daily driver projects become become bigger and more involved than we originally intended.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Thanks for the remarks, we really appreciate it!

Been working on the power steering set-up. Originally bought a saginaw pump/res, but couldn't fit it in tight to the block because of the short water pump. Chased down a type 2 pump/pulley/remote res from PSC...lots of room to put it where I wanted.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

We've been struggling with which seat we would use.
The original bench had a decent back, but rotted out bottom with missing springs/padding. We were looking at least $500 to get the parts we needed and have the stock bench reupholstered/rebuilt.
We got a set of pull out 2006 chevy truck buckets (with the seat belts in the back) to try...didn't like how they fit in the cab, I wanted more room. They were in perfect condition for $600 w/ center console (no way that was fitting)...so passed on those.
Looked at a mid 80's chevy bench, but wasn't really feeling it. Thought about the Astro van seats, but finding a take out seat in decent condition with a acceptable color wasn't likely...didn't want to reupholster a donor bench to get what I wanted.
So, took some measurements and talked to Twisted Stitch about a extended/expanded version of their Cruiser seat...a low side suspension seat that we liked in our Rhino. A couple weeks later, for about the same $ as reupholstering a bench of some sort, and we have this.
The back looks a bit tall, but we will see how it falls into place.

Looks good man. Seats are sometimes a hard decision to make. There are so many factors to conisder, from color, style, size.

I think it will look good in the truck.
