Re: 72 chevy modern swap

So they sent me a set of headers back! There was even two in the box!! Im happy happy now, and i sent them in to the machine shop to get milled flat. All headers and even the factory manifolds aren't manufactured completely flat. Thats why the bolts end up broken off because of exhaust leak. So they should be back in a day or two.

Re: 72 chevy modern swap

Any progress or plan on your cab?

You obviously have skills tools and a nice place to work even if you have to replace the whole floor might be just as well. Also on the back of the cab sure you know it's beat up and ugly but it's not going to be seen. Besides this is a driver right not a show truck

Good luck and keep us posted with your progress

Re: 72 chevy modern swap

The cab can be fixed yes, but there's more to it. I plan totally restoring it, and going to car shows with it. If i wanted to go mountain climbing or mudding i would've left the old four speed in but needed something a little more highway appropriate. Its just not the can either both of the inner fenders have been torched. Both of the front fender corners are rusted out. I was planning on finding a replacement truck and flip flopping parts to save money. I know regardless theres going to be rust. I just don't always have the time with work. Would take a lot of weight off my shoulders finding a parts truck. You will see what ends up happening, but main goal it to find out where i want everything.

After I built my quad cab I cut up the rest of floor from my truck. I could have helped you out if I had not cut it up.

Re: 72 chevy modern swap

I'd just search for cabs. Nice ones are out there but be prepared to spend $1000-$1200 for a nice one with nice doors. Sometimes you can find just cabs for $600. Go to a local swap meet, I'm sure there will be a vendor there with rust free beds. Usually those guys will find you parts if you ask them.

Headers back from the miller! I also remembered I still had the one bolt broke off in the head so took two tries with the welder and pulled right out. Headers look great.

Smile Re: 72 chevy modern swap

There are to fused wires that I need help with. One that hooks up at the power block and one that ties in to all the power wires under the hood. They both go up to the gauge plug, what the heck are they for?

And there on wire that comes right off the plug I cant remember where it goes. Brown with a white stripe.

For others that have questions about starter wire you can eliminate the yellow wires, and the one red wire the comes off the plug. for the alternator you can do away with the plug that is mounted to the front clip. Consist of a red. white, blue, and brown wire.

Re: 72 chevy modern swap

Found out what both of the fused wires are for. Went down to our local body shop and they told me they are both for the ammeter. They pulled them outside the cab for better reading and to get away from clutter inside the cab. Maybe he's wrong, but good enough for me.

Re: 72 chevy modern swap

For all the ls swappers out there with DBW (drive by wire) throttle body keep your factory throttle cable! It worked out perfect on my pickup. For the whole in the firewall I just used a set bit to get the hole to the right size and it clipped right in the hole. For the pedal assembly the wholes already the right size for the clip but you must cut a small line down for the cable to go through. I just used a band saw to cut the line down. Once I had all this down i had one of the guys at the shop hold down the pedal and wouldnt ya no it full throttle response.

Re: 72 chevy modern swap

I made a decision to keep the cab I got and just repair it. I got a buddy that owes me money for a set of wheel spacers. its not a lot but gotta make money somewhere haha. He was telling me that he was going to scrap a pickup he has and let me tell you it is shot!. Its a 1980 chevy 4x4 half ton. Has a 355 with only 600-1000 miles on it and a 350/np205 behind it. The reasons it has such low miles is because when he got it he had a motor built he threw it in his truck alright not thinking about it... It was long after driving it the transmission bellhousing split in half going you hill and he dropped everything out the bottom! He threw another 350 in to replace it but that only lasted a couple month till the flexplate split in half so there it sat. The body is rotting but the plan is to cut the back of his cab to replace mine and pull the sway bar off for my truck as well. It sounds a little different but ill make it work!

Re: 72 chevy modern swap

I'm a little lost on how you're going to use a square body cab to fix your rust issues? Seems like the appropriate patch panels will go a lot farther than hacking a newer cab up and trying to get the stuff to fit............ Or are you just using flat sheet metal that is good from this cab to try and make patches for your cab?

The only difference from the 72 to the 80 chevy is the length of the creases in the back but are both the same width. Basically going to use them as a repair panel and the back of the cab is spotless.
