Chevy Belair transmission - $50 (Santa Barbara)
Transmission I acquired. Pretty sure it came out a Chevy Belair
looks like one of them OD transmissions - does anybody know if this is the same length as a standard 3 speed ( ie drive shaft length changes?)

Re: Post your 60-66 craigslist finds

I am fairly certain the 3 speed OD transmission is the same length as the long tailshaft 3 speed transmission, like the one pictured here. I believe the spline count is different, so you need a different slip yoke, but otherwise fits with the current driveshaft.

That's a good deal for that transmission! I would buy that in a heart beat if it was close by

Yes, the 4 bolt side cover overdrive transmissions are the same length as the long tail shaft 3 speeds. I have two of the overdrive transmissions. The one currently in my truck came out of a 65 C10. I forget the count, but it has finer splines on the output shaft than the standard 3 speed I pulled out of my truck. The other overdrive that I have has the same spline count as the old 3 speed I pulled out.
I believe the output shaft spline count ran from 55-64 and then changed in 65. Another difference I noticed is that the input shaft necked down on my 55-64 overdrive trans but did not neck down on the 65 I put in the truck.

I was hoping you would chime in, you have most of the knowledge ive seen here on these beasts, ...

Ive sent him an email, Im in the middle of trying to sort a transmission swap, but $50 is $50, and probably worth the risk

Thanks, I did a lot of research on them before I made the decision to acquire one. I've had it in my truck for over three years now and picked up a second as a backup or for spare parts if needed. The only thing I haven't done with one yet is to rebuild it, but that will come eventually
But yeah, $50 is $50. The overdrive book by Randy Rundle is a great resource for digging into the details on how it all works.

Re: Post your 60-66 craigslist finds

I put one in my 72 because it has 4.56 gears. I love it. Now it has good pickup around town but I can cruise down the highway. I was lucky I did not have to change anything driveshaft wise just the shifter linkage. Mine came out of a 63 Impala. Good Luck!

Clean 3/4 ton, these don't come around every day. Not mine. Signs of an ex camper hauler, large mirrors and extra tank, which accounts for the much much better than average condition. A set of 19.5's would be in its immediate future if I was in the market. https://sacramento.craigslist.org/ct...485754110.html

And in a nice dry area of California.
Sadly though, who ever buys it will probably convert it to a half ton, put an LS in it and lower it - ruining the 'grandpa truck' beauty of it.

Right, the grandpa looking truck becomes an ex-grandpa looking truck, seen it many times. Large percentage of the original buyers of these 3/4 ton camper boom type trucks were veterans from WWII and Korea, they wanted travel, explore and enjoy the large beautiful country they fought for and put there lives on the line for.

Re: Post your 60-66 craigslist finds

Read the GMC camper ad ( very clean original piece by the way Jocko), looks like somebody already destroyed the clutch. Note position of pedal. Never liked the way the 4 speed gear shift pattern was for rookie drivers, some latter patterns had the more accurate L 1 2 3, I could see how somebody could blow a clutch or U joint pronto.

I actually love it! Considering the low initial cost and wide open potential for a build-to-suit camper interior, it wouldn't take much to create an awesome food service rig for vintage car shows etc. Picture a big walk-up window under that awning, or maybe on the driver side.
I'll take two hot dogs and three beers please! LOL!

Thumbs up Re: Post your 60-66 craigslist finds

Found this 61’ for $12. Going to look at her tomorrow. What do you guys think. I feel it’s worth way more then that in its current state. Minor Surface rust above window and on bottom of doors he says. 350 with a Muncie 4 speed with Bluetooth radio 🤙🏻
