Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Also I couldnt stand letting the new project go untouched..
So today I pulled the cover off the travelall and started pulling the chrome off..
Since theres no rush or anything on it, I thought itd be easier to go ahead and get some off this stuff knocked out early..
Pulled both bumpers, grill ,and headliner bows..gonna send them off to elpaso next week..

That reminds me of "if it weren't for bad luck..." line.

Do you like the work from El Paso? I've thought about using them on a grill.

Thanks Regan and Dale ...trying to get remotivated and going is hard..

Robert, I was very Impressed with elpaso after the work they did on my bumper..
All the chrome work they did looks great, it's not cheap, but there are very few alternatives in the IH world...if it was a Chevy, you could get new parts cheaper

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Well...I put it off as long as I could..
Hung a new light in moms kitchen,..made 30lbs of summer sausage, ...watched Hondo..
Finally decided the only way to get it done was just do it...
So I repsrayed the bedliner...
This time it went almost flawless...when I started ,I sprayed the sides 1st...I did one side ..spun around in to big of a hurry and sloshed about 1/2 a cup of liner out all over the unsprayed bedside..DANG IT!!!!!!!...
So I grabbed a rag soaked in lacquer thinner and wiped it right off...no harm no foul..
When that happened all I could think was , here I go again...
But from there on it went good....
This time I'm pleased with the results..
And you know what..this time I didnt get high as a kite off the fumes..
I had the right respirator cartridges on my mask...
I realized how good those worked when I pulled the mask off to get a drink if water..wow those fumes are ruff..

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Greg, the bed liner spray came out looking great. Kinda wish I had went with a matching truck color when I had my bed sprayed with the Line-ex bed spray.
Good choice in having the original bumpers re-chromed. Probably not a lot of after market support of the IH trucks I'd guess.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Thanks Gary ...I talked to linex about spraying the bed color match..they wanted $1k to do it..
I was like wow...!...
Even though I had to do it twice, I've got much much less in mine..
Yes its aggravating, its messy, it's got bad fumes,....but its done..
I just didnt think it would look right if it wasnt color matched ..
It wont see much use anyway..
And yeah..had to do the travelall chrome also.. I got a quote the other day for the bumpers, grill, bows and front emblem..prices have gone up some since last time...no surprise there..
I've also supposedly bought another grill for the travelall that's painted..I'll sand blast it and paint it white
The travelall will be two tone with the top being white..I got the rims back from the powder coaters the other day, had those done in matte white, so the grill may look better being white..at least I'll have choices..chrome or white
Gonna ship all that out this week..
Its hard to do anything with no aftermarket support, but such is life in the IH world

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

WARNING ALERT!!!!!!!!..
This is a warning to everyone with a lift..
Im trying to keep my mind occupied ,
so I sanded the cab to get ready for paint..found some spots that will need reprimed.., that comes later
while I was at it, I thought I'd look to see what it was gonna take to do exhaust , so i ran the truck up on the lift
Scoped out what needs done, and was gonna let the truck back down to ground level..just dont like leaving it unattended, 6ft off the ground..so, I hit the start button to release the lock...when I let off the button..it kept going..
Believe me the upper safety bar has no effect when the contactor is stuck....before I could run across the shop and pull the breaker, the damage was done.. I think there is a crease on the top of the cab...dont know for sure..to mad to look...and i know the cowl section is bent..
As if I needed any more drama in my life right now....
There WILL be a disconnect mounted on my lift right beside the go button, before it gets turned back on..
I hit the contact several times with a hammer before it came loose..
So a new contactor will also be orderd..

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

That sucks! I hope the damage isn't as bad as you fear.

Will you wire the disconnect in at the switch? I'd like to see where and how you do that.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Thanks Robert and Dale ..
I havnt looked at the cab roof yet...scared to..gotta cool down 1st..but I could see the safety bar at the top of the lift had a arch in it when the truck was all the way up...and I had my tall spacers on the lift arms..that didnt help any..if the shorties had been on it ,it probably never would have hit the bar..
At 1st when I realized what was happening, I pulled the bleed down valve...but the pump was putting more fluid out than the valve would bleed off...and it kept going up
The disconnect will be in the 2 power wires between the breaker panel and the contactor..
Gotta see what lowes has ...

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Greg, Ouch, that has to sting a bit realizing what happened! Step back and take a good long breath before looking to see what the damage looks like. Things do happen to our projects thru fault or no fault of our own doing.

Not quite as gut wrenching but had a bit of a situation of my own earlier this year for my '57 two door sedan. Was changing from an aluminum flex fan to a steel six blade with no room for a fan clutch. Direct drive off the water pump, 3/4'' between fan and radiator which is per specs from GM at the time. While wrenching in the tight quarters my hand slipped on the ratchet and put a hole in the original Harrison radiator! Damn it! I was getting ready for the first car show outing after the restore. Had to pull the radiator and took it into our last remaining radiator ship for a 100 mile radius. Took awhile for the repair but at least they could fix it. Was a bit antsy going back together but all was good.

Don't beat your self up about the lift, was not your own doing like my slip up, LOL. I was not too happy with myself when I dinged the radiator. Things do happen not of our choosing but take it in stride. When all is repaired and your taking a cruise in your rig the smiles per mile will be there.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Thanks guys..
I worked up enough courage to look at it..
Fortunately IH used some mighty tuff metal..
The safety bar on the lift was pushed up against the crossbar before I could kill the power...
All it did was leave a mark across the cab roof..no dent
The cowl was pushed down, I took a crowsfoot bar and bent it back up..
I got lucky ..

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Greg, good to see no real damage of any real sort. Pretty sure that was a huge sigh of relief when you seen the cab roof. Sometimes one gets lucky and sometimes one doesn't. Glad you dodged that bullet and can move forward.

Yep, back in those years believe all the cars and trucks used real steel. My Sister in Law has the 58 IH that belonged to her Dad. She learned to drive a stick shift on that truck when she was growing up as did all 4 kids in the family, my wife included. Not so many people can drive sticks now days.

This is good news. An emergency kill switch, like the one gas stations and assembly lines use would be a great addition. A good lesson for us all!
