Re: When Free Isn't Cheap Enough...
There looks to be a hose from the top of the waterpump to the head. I don't remember there being one of those on the early small blocks. Are you sure that it's not a corporate engine? A friend of mine had a 455 buick in his '72 a few years ago. He said all you needed to do was change the frame mounts to drop it in. What did the waterpump/ timing case area look like? Did the pump look like a regular chevy?

Re: When Free Isn't Cheap Enough...
Well just about everything that could go wrong.... did, but we got it home safe so no complaints! One of the many things that went wrong was that the memory card had been taken out of the camera!!! So I only had room for 4 pics, but I reduced the res and was able to get more.
By the time we got there the property owner had already done all fun stuff... So it was basically a matter of loading er up on the trailer and pulling it home. Those back roads were basically no better than logging roads and Nick's Yukon got quite a workout getting the 6500lb load up/down/around to paved road. It is a 3/4 ton and it does have one Chevy and one GMC fender. I tried to scrub the block code clean last night but wasn't able to read the numbers without a wire-brush and/or solvent. Just about every panel is bent or rotted in one way or another, but hey, the price turned out to be cheap enough after all I'll take some more pics today, but here's the "rescue effort": Last edited by Frizzle Fry; 10-21-2007 at 05:01 PM. |

Re: When Free Isn't Cheap Enough...
Great score! Looks much better than the POS that I just had to pay for but my engine sounds REALLY sweet!

Re: When Free Isn't Cheap Enough...
so did we find out what kind of motor it was?
How does the cab look on the inside? What was the last year it was registered/inspected in? |

Re: When Free Isn't Cheap Enough...
I'll go get the block code today. I got the wrong number on rescue day (front of pass head partial vin...).
The cab is ok. I've seen worse. It'll need outer floor boards and rockers for sure. Pass cab corner is tweaked and will either be replaced or straightened. Thanks for all the comments. I know it's pretty wild that I ended up getting it 2 years later! |

Re: When Free Isn't Cheap Enough...
There is some wierd history I'm trying to piece together here. Maybe some of you guys can help me figure out what happened to this thing.
First, It's all eight lug with an eaton rear so I know it's a 3/4 ton. But the VIN plate says max GVW 5000??? It has 1500 badges on both sides The build sheet I found under the seat and meticulously taped together has a different VIN than the VIN plate... (it says 327 by the way) Cab/fender/seat swap??? |

Re: When Free Isn't Cheap Enough...
Maybe a suspension swap? The seat could have easily been swapped, but to get 3/4 ton stuff under a half ton truck could only happen with a full suspension swap?

Re: When Free Isn't Cheap Enough...
Those look like 1/2 ton overload helper springs (1/2 springs). Maybe just axles and front cross member swap. Does the build sheet from the seat match the cab? I would ask what the title and registration say but I suspect they are both missing. BTW...that is just surface rust...LOL!

Re: When Free Isn't Cheap Enough...
Build sheet seams to match the helper spring, but the VIN is different? The seat is out of another truck, the suspension was added to the truck, that the only way, unless someone swapped the VIN plate (but it looks as original as the truck?) Get a title and get going, these things aren't going to keep it from being a work truck!!

Re: When Free Isn't Cheap Enough...
check the frame vin, front drivers side frame rail, to cab and build sheet.

Re: When Free Isn't Cheap Enough...
Mike, You might try grabbing the vin off the frame on the top rail of the drivers side, just aft of the power steering pump.
