Concerning the fuel tanks, and this is strictly my opinion, I had two round (barrel-shaped) beer kegs that I was going to polish and mount under my bed where the tool boxes are. I was going to make up lines where I could draw from either tank with a switching valve mounted in the cab by the seat. Having driven trucks for years and seeing thousands of trucks with the fuel tanks mounted behind the cab outside of the frame rails I thought it was just a natural place to put them. But it dawned on me one day, that diesel is much harder to ignite than gasoline. Diesel would probably put out a spark in an accident, where gas would just blow if there were any leakage at all.
Short of building a cage for the tank, and a fuel cell like the race cars use, I'm under the impression that 20 gallons of gas hanging out there with no protection is problematic.
I'm not trying to rain on any ones parade, and I don't want to offend any one, I just want to point out the potential for a serious hazard. Just my $.02
I agree 100%. I'd either leave the tank inside or put it in the rear like Suburbans and Blazers.

Remember the law suits GM went through from the fires that happen when 73 throu early 80's pick-ups were T-boned and the saddle tanks would split and exploded.

Re: 1 ton dually pics post

Thought I would add my recent acquisition to this thread. This is a '72 1-Ton I found in the local area and the PO had to let it go due to some business issues. I acquired the truck from a friend with a fresh, never-fired 396 (yes, we've been through all the debate and opinions about whether or not it's new, etc., lol), a good bit of bodywork done to it, the engine compartment and cab have been sprayed, and the key (in my opinion) is I feel I got a really good deal on it. No gas tank in the cab and no tank came with it, hence the question(s) I posed about fuel tank options for the 1-Ton variants.

Re: 1 ton dually pics post

I can't believe my eyes, but it shows just how small of a world we live in and how these forums never cease to amaze me. I made the decals for this LONG HORN back in the late '90's and never thought I would see it ever again specially on here. I never forgot doing this job, the owner at that time passed away recently. Seeing this has made my day.

I'd say you nailed it on the "dated" paint. I think it's sweet!

Re: 1 ton dually pics post

Hi all,

Just picked up this 68 C30 with stake body and PTO dump! 4 speed manual (L-1-2-3), L6 292 and front/rear from an 86 1 ton. Otherwise kept pretty stock over the years, looking to run as is with a little tinkering and tuning.

cheers!
