Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project
this thing is so awesome I can barely stand it.
why not put a big food truck style door on the side and polish it? would maybe look better than patches and you could set up at shows and sell kettle corn (anyone elses craigslist full of kettle corn businesses for sale?)

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project
As mentioned I plan on filling in the windows.
Cutting aluminum to fit the holes, then laminating them to a larger piece of aluminum on the inside. Then I will fill the cracks. I want to have a decal made for the side, not sure what I will put on it but I was playing around with paint program on my computer.

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project
Yesterday I finally got the step back into my step van.
My cousin came over with his equipment and got things fitted and welded up for me. Getting closer to being able to drive this!

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project
Beautiful workmanship. Not sure if it would be of any help, but I ran bought my over center hand brake from a place called MillSupply.com and they offer a variety of items for the Grumman Olson step vans. Just thought I'd pass it along.

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project
Got some seats today for the van...
Heavy, but sitting in place. They should work nicely. Got the throttle cable hooked up tonight as well. Perhaps some smoke rolling on the weekend?

Decided to go at one of the doors tonight...
This is the result. Hopefully I can make a match tomorrow and get my seat fabbed on Sunday.

I took the van for a little spin this morning...
Nothing too exciting, but it put a smile on my face. Still lots to do but my motivation is higher now... ha. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEV4FvJFcJ4

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project
With the darkness, dampness and cold, I am back inside.
Got a little done on the van tonight. Started filling in windows. Laminated two pieces, with a plan for a decal to cover the mess. Thought I'd share a few pics. Not very pretty, but it will be...

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project
Just read through your whole thread and it got me psyched to start working on my '66 Grumman Step Van. Was wondering what your initial process for stripping the paint was? Did you use a combination of paint stripper and sanding? If so, what grit seemed to work best? How did you end up getting the paint cleaned up around all the rivets?

I started cutting the aluminum with 80 grit on my orbital. I then kept stepping it up and eventually stopped at 3000 grit on wet disc. In hindsight I would have spent more time with the paint stripper as it can be a bit of a pain getting rid of some of the sanding marks. I then hit it with a high speed wheel with polishing compound. As around the rivets I used a wire wheel on both my drill and die grinder. Lets see a pic!

I have a line on a possibility for some glass. If that doesn't work out I'll be taking the plexi glass route. Do you have any insight?

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project
Some work done on the van in the past couple weeks....
I have been continuously sanding the windows. Pretty much there now. Decal to come. My cousin was able to give me a hand to weld up my seats. They turned out good in my opinion.. Today I started mocking up a dog house... I am considering getting out my fiberglass matt/resin and going over this while its in place. Am I crazy? Would that even work? Just thinking steel will add some potential heavy weight... Thoughts?

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project
I think fiberglass would work great for the doghouse and fairly easy to work with .The cardboard pattern looks good as well as the rest of your work .I love those old panel trucks like yours.

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project
Only thing comes to mind is adding some paper towel rolls to the top edges
"rounded edge" otherwise whatever works. Fiberglass may add some noise suppression? Otherwise I'd go aluminum to keep in theme. Whatever you choose I'm sure it'll be nice.
