Always getting good ideas here. The playing card trick is a new one for me. Nice!

Truck looks really good....like it is lounging there on the lift.

Thanks I think so. Ya a few reasons for the TDI swap one is, where we go offroading is 170mi away and with my 4.3L I burn 10 gal so hoping it will be better. Also it will be cool.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

So I have been working on improving the cooling of the motor over the past year. It never overheats just runs hotter than I like on the highway, due to the inter cooler blocking half the rad. I had made big improvements by blocking off gaps around the rad. So this round I cut out 4, 3" holes through the front cross member and sleeved them with pipe. Also cut down the angle iron that holds the bottom of the inter cooler. I figure I just gained 3" of unrestricted air to the rad.
Old pic
New pic. Just has to be painted and front trans cooler bolted up.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

can you reposition that trans cooler to the frame side and direct air across it so it doesn't add heat and take away flow to the rad? some of the modern trucks have them behind the trans, in front of the axle
could you install some air directors in the holes you just made to direct air flow to the rad fins?
how about just reshaping the whole cross member to still support the weight and stress but not be in the flow path?

Thank you for the ideas. Originally I did have the cooler back there, it did not cool well at all. I drive at 3-4" off the ground so no cool air. For the past 1.5 years the trans cooler has been below the rad (all good). On our 13hr trip south to Charlotte NC pulling our trailer last year I only had to shut off the cruse 3 times on the really big hills. So I'm just trying to give it a bit more cooling.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

What do you have for a fan shroud? Maybe some vents in it covered with rubber or plastic flaps that open with air flow while driving down the road?
Alot of newer cars have flaps of somesort to increase flow

I have a 16" electric mounted directly behind the rad (no shroud). I have no issues below 50mph its only on the highway doing 60-70mph, I'm running 2-4psi of boost at that speed.

Weather looks good Wednsday, Thursday for a test drive, but I won't know until it gets above 20*C 70*f or so.
I have put 10,000 mi on the truck in 2 summers, so I think it will do what I need.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

So another thing on the list was respraying the rear fenders due to the clear coat flaking off. I took off the fenders and scuffed them and flat cleared. Turned out good.

No my pin stripper (Petts) did them before. I just scuffed over them so I wouldn't loose them.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

OH WOW the truck works better than ever!!!!!!
There obviously was a problem with my old hydro-boost because first time I hit the brake peddle I almost locked up the brakes and through my dog on the floor lol.
The new front rubber having a taller side wall rides so smooth.
My son and I took it out to an abandon building I have been eyeing up and got some pictures. Oh and did a few burnouts just to make sure.
