Re: Project Charity Case

It was well past time to replace the exhaust on the old truck. After getting quotes for $350-$550 at local shops, I decided to try to save a buck. I purchased a Heart Throb kit without mufflers and picked up 2 Dynomax Turbo Mufflers from Rock Auto. Here is what $230 worth of exhaust looks like:

Here are a couple of pictures of the old exhaust. It necked down to 2" in several places and the passenger side pipe intersected the driver's side at a 90 degree angle.

I didn't follow the directions very well that came with the new kit. I wanted the exhaust to dump straight down after it got past the rear axle. In order to make this work, I had to turn the mufflers up on end. I know it is not ideal, but it works. I also cut the end of the tail pipes off and rotated what was left to achieve the look I wanted.

Here are my closing thoughts: I had to modify the passenger side down pipe by adding 3" into the pipe right after it exited the manifold. This was needed in order to clear the transmission linkage. I also had to rework the 45 degree angle on this same pipe. I'm not blaming this on the kit, I may have overlooked something simple or was a result of mismatched parts on my truck. Regardless, it was not a big deal to perform this modifications.

It should also be noted that I am still learning how to piece exhaust together, which can be seen in the symmetry between the left and right side pipes/outlets. I test fit the pipes a couple of hundred times, but it still isn't perfect. That is a little frustrating, but I am treating the project as a learning experience.

Oh yeah, the best part is that the truck no longer sounds like a school bus! It has a much deeper tone at idle. I haven't driven it too far, but once I get the mufflers broken in, I will get a sound clip posted.

Re: Project Charity Case

Thanks for the kind comments everyone. I tried to get a sound clip today of the new exhaust, but the digital camera I am using is better for pictures and not sound. I may try again later in the week.

Super work on the new exhaust. You saved some serious $$ doing it yourself. Bet you got a few good burns out of the deal.

Hello guys! I have been following this project for awhile now and you have done some great work! I live in Maryland and work in Virginia. I would enjoy meeting up with you sometime to see your project in person.
I am heading over to Afghanistan very soon, so I will be following this from afar, but not to worry, when I come back, my '69 396 will be completed and I will be able to take it on a road trip.
My truck has some hidden rust issues that I will have to tackle soon and your build thread and pics will be a great use as I tackle a project that I never had the nerves to start.

Re: Project Charity Case

Al, First and foremost, thank you for serving and protecting me and my family!

I am always up for meeting with fellow truck owners/board members. You are welcome to check out my amateur work. VA72C10 mentioned a meet this spring in Virginia. It is tempting for me to cruise up there during that time. I would like for him to check out the old truck too since he owned it before me.

Wow this is a great build, love the way you fixed the rust and repaired it but yet the exterior looks completely original and patinaed!

Thanks Geoff...you are way too nice. I was just thinking that you have ridden in my truck several times now and I haven't experienced the Mistress from the passenger's seat. I need to bum a ride off you the next time I am near your house!

327? What are you talking about? The valve cover decal says "307".

It must be a really rare 307, because it is the only one I have seen that is missing accessories holes in the heads.
