Re: Olds powered 72 GMC
Got the cutlass frame into the booth and sprayed for rust prev. Primer in the morning and satin on monday. Can't wait to get my truck under way. Air suspension is now on my list but no c-notch. It's gonna be a good solid truck and I don't want to do too much that can't be un-done for the next guy, if he want's to go stock.

Re: Olds powered 72 GMC
Prepared a bunch of stuff for endura satin the last few day's. Finally got thing's sprayed out yesterday and all look's great. I had the front suspension part's for the 67 Beaumont, hood springs, hood latch and some other odd's and end's thrown in as well as all of the Cutlass susp. component's. Diff will get sprayed today as well as some goodie's that need to be flipped. I'm going to look at a "solid and straight?" 69 GMC frame this morning(we'll see). I can grab it for $150 and I think it will be easier and quicker to get to completion than my 72. I'll have to transfer some part's over in order to use my 72's disk brake's. Made a deal on some new air bag's for my truck last night and traded an old 65 330ci olds motor I had for them. I may have a cool truck next year, ....... that I can drive.

Re: Olds powered 72 GMC
Today I pull the cab off of that 69 GMC frame I went and looked at. It's in really good shape. No pitting like my 72 has. I'll grab some pic's while I'm there.

Re: Olds powered 72 GMC
Pulled the cab off the frame this am. so that it would be ready for me to take away when it's time. Within the next 2 weeks for sure. I'm much happier starting with this one.

Re: Olds powered 72 GMC
Picked up some metal door panels. That "man's first attempt at plastic", cheese panel look, isn't for me. Some mod's to do but I have a plan for them. Traded for them, an old rochester carb I had laying around. Just about enough room in the shop now to start on my frame.

Thank's Vince! Probably has something to do with that Olds motor being in there and not one of those disposable orange thingy's. lol

Re: Olds powered 72 GMC
My GMC's Olds engine is finally, almost, nearly ready for the dyno. Now it just has to stay together. lol I stumbled across a 64 330ci olds motor(middle pic) that is in incredible condition. Pulled the head's and it's all standard with hardly any sign's of wear. Gasket set is on order and then she get's bagged up for a rainy day.

Re: Olds powered 72 GMC
Where did that dipstick in your olds motor come from? I have an Olds 350 on the stand ready to go for my truck,so I've been following your build with much interest. I need a dipstick and tube for mine and I think one like yours would be just the ticket especially with my Sanderson headers. Bob

Re: Olds powered 72 GMC
Ya Bob, it's a Lokar LS1 dipstick. There's info on the net and a guy show's you how to fit it. The diameter and depth are correct but the block side of the tube base has to be clearanced. Expensive but solves the header issue. GMC 2500, the mount's from the mid-late 80's diesel(Oldsmobile block) pretty much bolt right in. Schrum, the truck is actually torn completely down and look's very nasty. lol. I've got a ton of part's prepped and ready for final assembly. That's a little while away.

Re: Olds powered 72 GMC
I have a 69 Olds 350 I would like to put in my 72,definately something different.Would you have the part number for the right mount to use? Were all Olds diesel V8 mounts the same that could be used?

Re: Olds powered 72 GMC
There's a $45 adapter plate that will allow you to use any GM tranny. As far as a part number for the mount's, not sure. The diesel was only aqround for a short time and I'm pretty sure that the mounts for those few year's, would be all the same. This swap is much more popular than I thought. Many have done this before

Re: Olds powered 72 GMC
This 28 A just came into our shop on sat. Last owner was trying to shorten it up and ran out of skill. Current owner want's the body puzzle put back together followed by a chop. Inner bracing was chopped to #$%^ but it "seem's" to find home, quite easily. The frame came with some aftermarket boxing plate's that actually fit really well. The owner want's us to plate the frame, patch the body up and straighten it out(no filler being used) and do the chop. It's been shot, beaten, burned and a few other nasty's. Should be fun.

I can't say enough about the quality of the old steel. She came right back after all of that welding.

Re: Olds powered 72 GMC
Funny you should ask. Just took these before I left the shop tonight. My stepfather's car made it in wed. and will be completed within the next month and a half-ish. We polished the paint up to convince him not to paint it yet and just drive. He's pretty happy. Frame get's shot tonight by the late night paint sniffer.

Just showed those to my wife last night. Google pics. Did They do a El Camino Canadian version?
