Health problems put me in early retirement a few years ago, and now that we’ve adjusted to the reduced income I could never go back. I love spending every day doing whatever I find interesting, and being held only to my own standards.

Abilities to crawl around on concrete are limited, but being a former Jarhead really helps with the attitude. Old and broken has never prevented me from doing anything I want. It just slows me down a bit. Efficiency and wisdom also come with a lifetime of experience, making it much easier to avoid costly or painful misadventures.

In spite of any limitations, in the last few years I’ve managed to paint my truck, upholster the interior, redo the engine compartment, design parts for my machinist son to fabricate, and dozens of other projects not related to the truck.

When I was a kid, the father figures on TV all sat on the sofa in a nerd sweater or sport jacket reading the newspaper. Never could see myself fitting into that image. I figure I’ll have plenty of time to evolve into a mature/elderly/senior citizen if I live long enough to become completely incapacitated. Until then I’ll continue finding fulfillment in the same pursuits I’ve always enjoyed.

I make it a priority to achieve three simple goals every day - learn something new, make a difference, do something that makes me happy. So far it’s working!
I have a similar story major surgery on my back, shoulders ,neck knees, elbows etc.Im 50 feel 90 and am just getting started !I just do things a lot slower and more cautiously.

Re: geezers unite

I was born Feb. 1952, but feel 21 when I hear that big block rumble. I don't drive the Vette much, but it's safer that way. I get just as much thrill from the big block as I did at 21. I did a frame off on this one.
I'm a lucky man. I've had back surgery and hernia surgery, but I do anything I want.
I still work 10 hrs pretty much every day, but I avoid stress, passed that off to the son in law. I like to drive big rigs, so when our equipment needs to be moved, I take the runs that have good scenery and cafes, and I usually take a loafer car buddy.
I get to see a lot of neat cars and trucks in my travels.

Re: geezers unite

Well, I'll chime in here again. Passed the 75 mark last spring. I've mentioned my age several times here, but glad I can still TELL people my age. Is there someway to put brakes on Fathertime? I can sympathize with most of you "kids" in your 50s. It's a big adjustment to not have the energy we once had, but as you guys have mentioned how you dealt with it. I still do the same stuff, but much slower. It's amazing at how far the floor is from there UP than it was 35 years ago. Since we don't hear from GMC Jim anymore, am I getting near the oldest here?

My kids (in their 40s) and other young ones that grew up under our feet, when they ask when I'm going to grow up. I tell them and this is my goal to always be young at heart.
Enoy the company of my only bride of 49 years, travel when we want and enjoy every minute we still have together. Do the best I can to always try to see something positive or humorous each day inspite of the circumstance. I'd like to be the same ol' pain in the rear and enjoy a prank or joke on friends and relatives as I always did. However there's not that many left anymore, and still really miss them.

So let's stick together, twist some more bolts, and enjoy the adventures still to come.

You're sure older than I am! I'll only be 73 my next birthday!

I know what you mean about our peers checking out. I get a quarterly retirement news magazine and when I first retired from the military 34 years ago I didn't know anyone in the obit section. After a few years I might see one, then later maybe two an issue. Now it's the exception when I don't see anyone I used to know.
I guess we need to keep on truckin' if for no other reason then to set some records!

Re: geezers unite

Been a little over 4 years since I posted, now I'm 66 instead of 62 but still playing with cars and trucks. Wife and I have been together for 44 years after meeting on a blind date. She's still my buddy and my pal, three sons, two daughters-in law, 2 grandkids and # three in the oven due next month. Loving retirement and life everyday. Just finished my'71 Chevelle this past summer, getting geared up to go back on my '57 2dr sedan. Pics of the Chevelle after the paint this summer.

Ironhorse, The Chevelle is looking good. I think we talked about the Chevelle's before. Here's my 71 SS454. I've owned it for 27 years. I've put about 2000 miles on it since that pic was taken 8 years ago.

flashed, you better play hard. The trip from 53 to 63 is a short one.

I don't know how I got involved with this thread. I guess to give support and show respect to my elders. You geezers give me encouragement. I hope when I get old I'll be so active. I'm doing what I can to assure that happens, but some parts might be worn out by then.

special-K, I know your three years behind me, but I hope you feel as good as I do when you get here.

In the meantime, I feel like I'm catching some of these other guys.

When I met her in '10 her kids were calling her Nana Montana (had one grandchild then. Outdated name now, but in her capris (that's them pants they wear what ain't long enough...used to call 'em clam diggers in my day) I'd tell her she had a teeny bopper butt. I know she cooks a lot with olive oil...and uses it on her skin and hair, too. I use solar powered dirt
