'66 Longbed 327 w/AC project

LOL thank you, it's not that i mind spending the money from the mistake, or that i made a mistake, it's the WAITING for a tube to get here to fix it. I would like to have the cab in both colors of paint by the end of next weekend (not a lot gets done during the week) so i can put the inner fenders, core support, etc back in for the motor coming home soon.

I found a tube locally, but it was made in 2009 when i got there to check it, expired in 2011. I ordered some more online (from CA but drop ships about an hour from my house, annoying i can't just pick it up) so i'll do that this week, got some Kent sealer and air gun to do the door jamb seems, and see if i can't sand and mask and prep this weekend, and finish putting my father in law's 57 back together (bed, rear fenders, etc) so we can tie his project up.

Finished sanding last night, primed this morning and then laid the white roof/stripe areas this afternoon.

We have been playing with nason clear, sprayed over 2 coats after the AE sprayed and still tacky. It was a bear redoing the white today (we realized the garage was too dark, and we missed some spots, but being AE we had to scuff and respray the white today) it was a bit too hot and humid for the hardender we thought. Anyway, we laid the 3rd coat of clear on the roof in desperation (it was drying fast!) and it really layed. We got a thumb print where he almost fell and hit pushed off the tacky paint in desperation, but that's what sanding, etc is for, and it's in an easy to reach spot.

Without wetsanding/buffing, it looks great (both cowl pieces in green and the white cab part). I can only imagine with wetsanding the clear when dry and polishing that it will look friggin amazing. It looks as good as new car paint now, but i think with the wetsanding and buffing it will just be WOW. I'll try and post some pics tomorrow of the white after it sets up, here's the dried cowl piece we first tried the nason clear with.

Which Nason clear are you using?
We were originally using the clear for overall, but found that it took too long to harden in a garage situation (too much time for dust to settle) then we tried their clear for spot panel/repair, and it lays-out flatter, and hardens quicker, when not baked.
I am using Nason base/clear on all non-exposed surfaces, and Chromabase on all exposed surfaces to save some coin.

P.S. you need to wet the floor down, & get a fan to exhaust the overspray.
It makes a world of difference.

I originally went to the paint shop asking for 7500 or 8500 clear and the old time paint tech said they dont make it anymor, but out of the three nason urethane clears on the shelf, the spot clear was a step and a half better than the others and as close to the 7500 as he thinks he could get. He was dead set against clearing over the AE but i wanted a bit more shine without starting over, and the added material for sanding and better color protection are a bonus. We are very pleased how its looking, it's easily as nice as a new car base coat clear coat (which isnt saying a lot). Again, it looks great now, with wetsanding and buffing i think it will be a great show finish. We are wetting the floor but our fan leaves some to be desired, doesnt move that much air. Also, we were mixing wrong (4:1:1 instead of 8:1:2) but its been laying so nice we're sticking with it. using centari paint, nason hardner, nason clear.

Thanks, i'm very pleased with them. I'm kind of glad we had to respray the white, because i didn't like the passenger side when it was done. Gave me a chance to work it a little more. Wife has been out of town so i'm taking care of the daughter, and then next week i have to get the '71 ready for goodguys columbus, but i hope to get the color on the cab still before next weekend.

spent all day yesterday wetsanding and masking, today frame masking and wiping down to paint, tack cloth, then paint. had to pick up some high temp reducer and clear activator because it was 82 and 80% humidity for a bit. Humidity dropped to about 70 a few coats in, but heat stayed high, so we had to move fast. I'm very pleased with the end results, it looks greats and we had only minor leakage that should rub off near a couple hidden seam areas.

I'll be the first to say that i don't have much skill. I just read a ton online and on the internet, and i pay to use a lot of nice tools or supplies, and i pay to start with good sheetmetal. I didn't lay any paint, i did some primer and 99% of the sanding. This is the first time i've ever attempted bodywork. I'm happy with the way the driprail came out, and ecstatic about how the filled seams look, and i love the paint. Normally, if i can't rattle can it, i don't even attempt it. I'm more of a "bolt things together" guy. I can say this project is teaching me attention to detail, project management, and to redo something if you're not happy enough with it. The guys here that to me seem to have skill, are the one's fabricating and making custom sheetmetal, and repairing parts i would have thrown away long ago, and can really make a truck POP. I just hope to do justice with a nice, clean example.

What shade(name) is that color on the body?

It is "Light Green" (503) in the '66 stock truck colors. It's in centari acrylic enamel and urethane clear, not mixed or sprayed according to directions though. All said and done, i think i'm 1000 into paint and clear and seam sealer, etc. It looks every bit as good as basecoat clearcoat, deeper even, and we haven't wetsanded or buffed yet. I would not attempt the tricks we did with metallic colors though, i would pay the extra for base coat clear coat.

Just to re-iterate, i CANNOT shoot paint, i can't take credit for that. I mean, i could if you set the gun up and put it in my hand, but i just read, read, read. I see what you guys do and i copy it. I see the products people try and i buy some and do test panels. My father in law works at a dealership body shop, and 2 of his employees work on and paint older cars, so when i make a mistake or want to do something questionable, i run it by them and see if they think it'll work or be fixable, and we try it. I read the thermometer and the humidity gauge and i buy the right reducer and activator and get it all ready.

In the end, i did a ton of research, did most of the prep work, pointed at it and told my father in law where to focus coverage, and i mixed paint and clear and kept the floor wet, etc. I don't think i'll ever do enough paint to get a hand at the actual spraying part. Best i can say is, if you want to do it, do it! But focus on the prep, and put enough on to let you work on it if there's a problem, and if you can afford it, clear over it so you can sand and buff that if you have issues.

This site and a couple others have been invaluable not just in figuring out the right ways to put the truck back together, but to get the finishing touches a cut above the next guy that just slaps it together without any research. I really feel that this truck will be my finest work yet.

Word from the machine shop is that the 327 was already .030 over, going to .060. In the meantime, probably focus on doors next so i can get all that glass, weather stripping, etc done and be totally done with all things cab related.

I can honestly say it's rewarding, especially with the attention to detail you guys put into it. It's nice to see dents gone, seams filled correctly, no chips....at least until you drive it too much and get them all back in

Getting back into the swing of things, got the doors sanded and primed and the white on last night after pushing the truck outside to sit, hope to do the green and interior grey this weekend.
