Re: 48 Chevy COE custom diesel build
Lol Lowers....that's a good POV on the motor home thing. Those triangles are growing on me and the wifey would be happy aswell. Ya know, my wife doesn't like lowered trucks either. My personal truck has a morphed 7" lift on it that I did, that she insist I don't sale(I've been thinking about it)and her old rig was an excursion with a 4 1/2" lift on it. I made her sale that junk 6.0 liter diesel thing and I don't thing she'll ever forgive me, haha. Worst engine ever made in that truck!
On a side note, I'm really burnt out with this truck right now. The huge failure of a purchase this was has really got me down, not to mention the agonizingly slow rate of progression due to all the intricate work envolved. I never would have imagined I'd be this envolved with body steel, judging from what the man and the pics said! I'm gonna be off tomorrow, and it will be raining, so imma trudge forth in this battle, but if it where sunny and dry, I'd be doing something else for a minute to help salvage my sanity, haha. I was taking the driver door off yesterday, and it wouldn't cooperate, I almost lost my temper.....that could cost quite a few man hours of progress!!! Any of you guys ever gotten angry or just plain burnt out for a minute on your builds??

Re: 48 Chevy COE custom diesel build
I see where your post is goin! The need to vent is often an outlet some of us get to. My last truck I dubbed "hardtimes" cause it was simply just that. Everything fought me. I literally had to put a patch or reconstruct almost every part of that truck, hood, all fenders, full cab work, stake pocket on bed, you name it I touched it. The truck build was overshot by time and drug on. but I wouldn't half step if I could help it and that built taught me a lot. In fact the truck still haunts me as I'v almost had it sold a ton of times and that is hopefully its fate. but.... my luck hardtimes will stay with me forever and I'll name it badluck! moral of it, yeah there are days where your jaw drops, your heart sinks and you dang near beat up your truck (that's when it gets bad) so..... remember this. Life is short for one. For 2. its a gift to have tools, space and time to do this. let alone money. There are starving kids in this world, illness, tragedies big and small. Your troubles and pain would be a gift to some people. So take a step back, find a happy place, don't dwell on the guy that sold you the turd that you are polishing. People will enjoy your truck out on the road and that's what it is all about. Putting these things back on the road and inspiring people to enjoy the era and to possibly get into saving these themselves.

Re: 48 Chevy COE custom diesel build
Ya my '67 Jeep has a 4" lift on 33" and my DD '87 Jimmy has a 6" lift on 35" so I wanted something really low.
We all get frustrated with a project like this. The amount of work involved gets overwhelming for one person. When I get burnt out and frustrated, I take a week or so off from working on the truck and don't even think of it. But don't take to long or you will loose interest. Just remember we are not rebuilding K cars here. You and lots of other ppl will love seeing it drive around. You have done amazing work and no amount of people can finish it over night. Bob

I usually take my dirt bike out and go for a long ride.... takes my mind off everything except the ride or race as the case my be...
Happens to everyone... make a list,, do one thing at a time and only one.. then cross it off the list.. You get the sense of accomplishment that way and you see forward progress |

Re: 48 Chevy COE custom diesel build
All great points, thanks for the advice fellas. I didn't work on it much today, just got the front cab roof/window frame roughed in. It was tedious, went well though and that felt good. I'm definitely gonna try to ease off of it, especially when I start feeling the pressure, haha.
I ordered some lizard skin and the sprayer. Pricey stuff.....I was gonna use it as undercoating, but think I'll save it for sound control/interior only and find a good undercoating for under cab, fenders, inner fenders, etc. . Any of Ya'll got a good undercoating to recommend?

Re: 48 Chevy COE custom diesel build
all that bed liner stuff similar concept. I'v seen raptor liner sprayed and it look good. I've personally used Herculiner (brushed on) I like it. The rustoleum is bedliner is terrible, though all their other products I'v used were good. I usually undercoat all metal with chassis saver, then top coat with the bedliner for extra durability. I'm not so sure I'd put the bed liner directly over bare metal. Not sure if they have any rust inhibiting properties.
Eastwood makes a spray on sound deadner, might want to look into that. then use lizard skin on the under side of body.

Re: 48 Chevy COE custom diesel build
Ah thanks 99... I like the herculiner brushed on idea. I'll do it over paint.....I'm looking for added protection myself. I already got the sprayer and bucket of Liz skin on the way for interior sound control.
Iowaboy, I figured I'm not the only one, haha. I'm just surprised I hit a wall that quick, but that's how I am. I always push to hard. I need to treat it like you and do it for fun instead of turning it into a job. I've done that the last few times I've touched it. Focused more on drinking my beer, and less on pushing so hard....just enjoying it. If it takes a few extra months to get it done, then so be it. thanks Chance

Re: 48 Chevy COE custom diesel build
chance, I'v learned the hard way, deadlines rarely get met. Especially if you're going through the steps you are to make things right. Most of these trucks never get the roof taken off and most guys aren't doing COE to your degree. So you gotta look at the whole picture. There isn't a how to book on this, rules or timeframes. Some days I struggle with confidence. Others I'm on top of the world. Its going to be up and down, if it wasn't it would feel bland.

Re: 48 Chevy COE custom diesel build
I used both Lizard skin sound control and ceramic insulation inside. So far really happy with it. Then I used rubber under coating under neath.

Re: 48 Chevy COE custom diesel build
That's gonna be the route I go Lowers. Seems like a good one to me. Want that old girl toting me around like a magic carpet ride, haha...
You are right on there 99.... I understand all that. Guess I just venting out loud and I'll try and keep that under wraps. But it sure is easy to exude it when only typing and not talking face to face, or it sounds worse in text I suppose, haha. I appreciate the good words and it definitely helps feel better knowing that people see I'm trying to do it right and not just rush it onto the road....well I am trying to rush, haha...you know what I mean though. Chance

Re: 48 Chevy COE custom diesel build
Hey Chance, looks like your making great progress. It's a shame about the rust issues, but hey, your on the build back up side of things now. As I'm sure you know by now your COE will be one of few with the Cummins and with you doing most, if not all, of the work it will truly be your truck. Many can only dream of owning and driving a truck they created. Now I've had and have some cool cars; FFR Cobra, '31 Oakland 3 window coupe, '54 3100, to name a few. One thing I can tell you is that COE will give you more smiles and looks and personal satisfaction then just about anything else you could build.
Hammer away my friend, hammer away. Rob

Re: 48 Chevy COE custom diesel build
Got a little done on the truck....not near as much as I'd like, but progress none the less.
Decided to tackle the front roof windshield area. It turned out alright I suppose. And then I shot a little shiny red rattle can on there to see how straight and correct it turned out. I'm very pleased with it. Then I welded some more on the pass side cab top , belt line and the door jam and ground it all smooth. I have more there to do, but I got board, so I decided to start the pass side door rebuild. About a foot of the bottom of the door, inside and out, has to be completely replaced. This is a crash course in body work that is for sure, haha. This started slow, but now I have a plan, so it should come along a little quicker now. Some pics of the bottom center section. A lot of Shrinker stretcher work here. It turned out good. I'll now pattern out and fit the inside sheet metal, then the front. Leave it all loose, remount the door, then tack in this bottom center section, adjusting the gaps and alignment. Tis the plan anyways. Any ideas out there are welcome. More to come....I'm now really into this door, so hoping I'll get time to get on it tomorrow some, might knock it out. Chance

Nice job on the roof window edge, that's a very hard spot to work on IMO.

Nice metal work! Getting real good at it. I had similar work to do on my belt line. I see you mentioned about restoring a Farmall M. I have a 51 H and 52 SM.

Thanks Sid...my M is a 51. I added the rear 3-point to it so it's more practical for my use.
A few pics I just took. It's a little dirty atm. You see the football under the seat....custom air ride right there, haha.

Re: 48 Chevy COE custom diesel build
Nice repair work on the metal Chance! I often shink too much, then stretch back, then need to shrink again...lol.
Great tractor. Neighbors had one of those Farmall's when we were kids. We would work all day stacking hay or clearing ground to be able to drive it one round in the field. They still have it too. |
