Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

So after boot fair today, I came home and did some indoors jobs, then cut all the hedges and shrubs.

Nicola was away for the weekend again, and got back before I was done, so I had a break, then carried on to finish the cleaning up.

Then I thought I would tackle the clean up of the little yellow Fire Engine.

Strip down.





Most of the chrome detailing was rusted and not too good, but I managed to polish most back to a decent standard.



Polished and painted bits.



Then the body, used T-Cut polish rejuvenator to cut back the dead paint after masking the mudguards.
Followed by Zymöl Polish.



Finaly the reassembly which left us with this so far.



Last thing I need to do when I get time is to get back in the woodwork shed and turn a new steering handle.

Weekend over.

Looks like a very predictive day, love those little things just have so much character not gonna show my granddaughter lol.

Load of stuff going on behind the scenes that is distracting me from giving the truck my full and undevided attention.

Also have a lot of yearly house and yard work plus maintenance to do.

Hopefully tomorrow will see me back on the truck for a bit.

Today though, I had to clear the wooden deck and then also the paving behind the house to pressure clean it all.

Took 9 hours including breaks and distractions.

I still need to brush in the kiln dried sand between the pavers and pain the deck in Ronseal decking oil.



Amazing what a year does.

Done. So though it distracts from the truck build, there are a load of things that needs doing when you own a home.




Through the day I was chatting with my friend Dennis in Missouri as he had not slept all night after having a medical procedure done yesterday.

He was at the body shop early, painted some NASCAR truck parts up, then continued with his little side project.

A 66 C10 onto a NASCAR frame and chassis.

This was his first run, and will be used on a different project later.





Today he was working on the final build unit.



Fortunately he knows a decent body shop guy.......



Really nice when you have a load, and I mean a load of NASCAR truck parts free to use.





Tomorrow may be a wash out for boot fair.

Still,,there will be truck time.

That truck is looking way cool.

Those house choirs really can get in the way of truck building for sure. Bout ready to have my kitchen blown up for around 6 weeks. That will probably get in the way of much trcuk stuff.

Good luck, hopefully you can have a semi dry boot fair.

it's constant, it's expensive and consumes all your time. but… happy wife…

You will be even more impressed then if I tell you I clean my legs with the pressure cleaner too

Thing is, I have only cleaned up about 25% of the paving, it never really stops.

I post weird n wonderful stuff as I do not believe we are one dimensional, and we all learn from each other, so if my restoration of the little fire truck, inspires or shows the way, then it is great.

The little fire truck sold for £40.00 to a friend who likes quirky things.

I will miss it, but it is very much one of those things that you,eventually fall,over and swear at.

Mickey next door was around for a coffee yesterday when Imwas pressure cleaning the paving and deck, and saw it....... He totally freaked out about it.
I told him it was rather special and came from a special home.

No boot fairs today due to rain, so I spent about four hours doing admin this morning.

Funny how in this great hobby of ours, stuff takes on a whole new value when you do or don't have it.

Martin popped over at lunch time today to deliver on a trade we did previously, he needed quarter windows for his build and I needed some sun visors.

The stalks will need to be cleaned up and painted and the visors will get covered in black vinyl to go with the rest of the interior.



When Martin came, he also brought me another treasure.

I bought it off his friend Doof who banger races, this is from a Ford Focus, and he has access to more of them.

Special price to me was £10.00 which I think is fair, as I cannot be bothered to drive however far to a breakers yard, then removing it from a car.
Because I am removing the viscous coupled fan from the 350 motor, and due to the type of potentially slow traffic we have here in the UK, having an electric override makes more sense.

It's also a perfect fit over my standard radiator.



Of course things are not always simple, and despite getting the plug and wiring included, I now have 6 wires to deal with, two fans that are in one unit, but are actually different sizes. It also has two of the six wires feeding some unit with a spiral and resistor or transistor, see pic below.
Any idea what that is for?

No idea what it is for at this point.




In other news, more truck directed actions today.

Martins engine stand came back and now my transmission is mounted on it, awaiting its service, shifting kit and new seals.



We also got the truck back on four wheels, new steering parts fitted, and the drop link etc refitted.



One more bit of cleverness from Martins day job, which is always about checking and double checking and legal culpability Is to mark your nuts with red paint.

So I went into the house and asked Nicola for some red nail polish.......

Every nut and split pin fitted and torqued down was marked so that I can see where things have been done.



HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY..........!!!

Just throwing it out there, something that we use in the aircraft industry to mark nuts and bolts and other fasteners after they are torqued or to identify slippage is called torque seal or anti-sabotage lacquer. Works good, looks good and is cheap and not messy

Great progress Rian, good to see the truck back on it's wheels, torque marks are a great idea, I always use them , especially handy when there are lots of similar fastenings.

Anyway, take 2

Came home late, and by 7pm I was out to paint the deck and other wooden structures around the BBQ.

Took an hour to complete and by 8.30 I had cleaned up and packed up.

Houses are BUGGERR, always needing attention. And I do like it decent looking.

Dennis' truck will be great, he has build loads of cars, trucks and bikes over the years, so having a NASCAR based truck should be interesting.

My new job is challenging, but my manager is happy, so I guess I just need to keep at it.
