Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
I had issues getting my Myrtle Wood sized for my new truck deck, so I turned to quarter sawn red oak. Bought some boards this weekend and they are planed up, ready for sizing and milling.

Will you stain or otherwise polyurethane these boards for your bed?

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
I scored an original GM Grille and Grille insert for my 70. Still in the box.
I couldn't believe my luck. Installed it over the weekend. My original is still in great shape if anyone is needing one.

I ordered the patch panels to finally address my rust issues. Got them from GMCPAULS.COM . Can't wait to tear into this truck finally. I'm thinking color change to a champagne beige like this

I believe we will stain - just to bring out the look of the wood. It has a lot of flecks and designs in it. Then cover with the best spar varnish I can buy.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
Spent far too much time trying to get my drivers idea door to align and get the right gap between the fender and door. My trucks new name is M%÷£€÷_&*#!r.
Then finished cutting out the remaining rotted bed strips. Tried to do more but it was hot and I got tired. Did I mention it was hot today in Sacramento?

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
I put a clamp onto the new fuel line and bolted that onto the frame (pump end). Now the line is super solid so I think that will work.
I also scraped all of the old carburetor gasket from the intake manifold. It took a couple of hours and lots of carburetor cleaner, but the job is done. I have the hole plugged until it's time to put on the carb. |

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
My dad and I started replacing the cab-to-frame bushings. It's great to get my dad's help as he is super experienced in heavy equipment repairs and such (not in sheet metal repairs, alas). Plus, he owned this truck for 20 years before I got it.
First, I opened up the replacement shims with a round file and drill bit. After much discussion, we decided on how the replacements should go. The kit from Classic Heartbeat lacks pointed bolts and I have lost(!) one of the rear originals. We did get the other rear original bolt and its new bushings in and I was able to show him how the cab needs to rotate clockwise to line up for the rest. I just came in from turning a replacement rear bolt to a point so it'll find that cage nut easily. We plan to work on it more tomorrow. It was satisfying hearing dad agree that the bushings should have been replaced in the 1980's. I had asked him about it when I first came to own the truck but he didn't agree. It's clear he never looked at the bushings before today. |

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
Kind of irks me sometimes there is so many after market parts and products for 67-72 Chevy trucks and very little for GMC. I bought these polished aluminum coil packs covers on Ebay for around $ 100.00 including shipping (Note how much Holley ones are out of plastic) and two GMC emblems for 7.00 each to try this. Don't know yet if the GMC emblems are too big for my taste yet, maybe they'll grow on me. Makes the motor look bigger like a Duramax or something, fun anyway.

Replaced this sucker and got my backup lights working. So nice to have backup lights after 3 years.

Installed new cab mounts, steamed off motor, started on getting radiator out to replace radiator support mounts and fix oil leaks. Valve covers and damper seal leaking.
