Yea I figured, I was just giving a little ribbing since things have been moving along quite nicely. But the easy part is now done, its the little things that can stretch a project out long enough to pull all your hair out. If you want to, you can make me a set of those nice motor mounts. No hurry as its a slow project but I will be stuffing a P-pumped 24v in a 68 K-20.

Since I have taken the time to make all of the templates and everything, I am seriously considering making kits for exactly what I have just done. Havent really got the ball rolling yet, but I kind of feel like it is my calling.

Well to let the cat out of the bag, I am seriously considering buying a CNC plasma table, or maybe a water jet.

If I do, I am probably going to get in the business of building 4x4 conversion kits, motor mounts, ladder bar kits, goodies like that.

I am looking strongly at building kits for 2wd van's as well to make them into 4x4's

Also little things like frame reinforcing kits for trucks from 67-99 litte things like that.

Re: The Boss 72 Chevy 4x4 Cummins Dually

i think it would be making some money , i allready told porterbuild about this build , figured he might be able to sell this in a kitform .
this was before you mentioned of trying sumtin simulair

i did seen a diesel build a while back on the forum and he allso was thinking about selling it as a kit but using a stock crossmember for a 2 wheel drive setup

Of course, something I would love to do for a living and you live on the opposite side of the US. Of course there isnt the kind of buisness for that kind of market here as there is there.

Re: The Boss 72 Chevy 4x4 Cummins Dually

Well this makes more sense now. After your PM I was confused as I thought you were putting this in that mid 80's crew cab, but I had seen no activity on that, but then I found the thread over on Pirate and thought "hey, I know that truck". So I came back over here and did some poking around and lo-and-behold, here it is.

Looks good. Amazing what some progress will do to the motivation factor. How did you do the mounts/crossmember??

I probably should have specified, I sold the 85 a couple of months ago. Kept the 454 out of it, that is going in one of my wreckers.

This is how:

After a ton of measurements/lots of thought I came up with a 3D CAD file.

Then went to school and cut them out

And welded em out.

I am still going to be adding a cross member that bolts in that will go under the engine. It will be removable so as that I can drop the oil pan with ease if I ever need to change the oil pump or something like that.

Re: The Boss 72 Chevy 4x4 Cummins Dually

So is the motor in the truck?? Man, I wish I had access to equipment like that when I was doing mine. I could have made mine really cool with that stuff. Well, really cool if I knew how to operate the equipment.

I like the direction your decision has gone. No offense, but I like this truck (especially with what you have done to it so far) better than the square body crew cab. I know it had some sentimental value to you, but this thing blows that one away in the coolness department.

Oh, if you decide to do oil pump work, you may want to go through the front cover instead of the oil pan. Just a thought.

Yup, its bolted in and fits great!

Just need to get my bellhousing so I can get the NV4500 installed (has a getrag bellhousing currently)

I agree, the 72 is a much cooler truck. And the 72 actually means a lot more to me, it is my favorite body style, it is what I had in highschool when all of my friends either had square bodies or fords. And the 72 is the last great truck Chevrolet made.

Re: The Boss 72 Chevy 4x4 Cummins Dually

Looking again at the frame rails, think it would be worth it to plate past the steering box and sleeve the frame for the bolts? Pushing extra weight and turning extra weight I just see a potential for a weak point.

You are very spot on, that is actually happening, right now I have the truck assembeled for fitment of major components, and then once I know everything is right i will blow it all back apart and finish boxing the frame, as well where the bolts for the steering box go through the frame I am drilling the holes larger then inserting tube through them and welding it in then grinding it flush to make it extra strong.

The entire frame will be boxed front to back.

I figure if it is worth doing, it is worth doing right!
