@Ls1nova71 on the cluster with the tach did you but the tach with the 8k lens then paint the speedo or did you paint the tach on lens too?

It's a 5000 rpm tach, I used a factory lens and just painted the speedo numbers.

Re: 67-72 Electric speedo

I plan on making some more plates and cover boxes this week... any input or feedback? has anyone put theirs together yet? I have a list of interested members but would like to know from others how their install went. Would it be easier if I made a template for the rear tin cutout? I can punch them out pretty easy if you want to send them to me as I have a few rear tins on hand. We could do a "core charge" deal where I can send you a rear tin already cut out with the plate and rear cover already installed in exchange for your rear tin. I'm not trying to make a living here just suggesting I could make it a bit easier on those who do not have the ability or access to machine tools. I am just trying to share my work here if you are going to go with this method. Any suggestions? I have not had time to make an LED light version but I will soon and I have a 3 hole dash at work that I am going to play with making the plate and box fit.

Re: 67-72 Electric speedo

I realize the light hole on the plate could be moved up just a bit to give better clearance for the box and will have that changed before making more. Anything else?

Re: 67-72 Electric speedo

Dan,

I have mine done for the most part! I will post up pictures when I get home this evening.

Everything went together very easy! The most difficult part is getting the tin cut like you mentioned. Its more of a pain in the butt than difficult, especially if you don't have the required tools! I kept having to go back and cut more and it took a while to get it to fit right. If you did the tin exchange, that was definitely something I would have done thinking back.

The box on the back fit well on mine. I have a 70/80s Camaro tach installed and was worried that it would hit but didn't have any clearance issues. The only suggestion I have is to change the hole that the wiring passes through as you mentioned before. I haven't done my wiring but I'm sure that would make things easier.

As far as the light sockets, I think there were a few fitment issues. I can't remember off the top of my head if it involved the camaro tach I installed or the new speedo. I will take some pictures tonight to show you my progress. If I see the cluster in front of me it will probably remind me of a few other items too.

Thanks for helping us all with this! You have made a great product!

-Will

Re: 67-72 Electric speedo

Quick question on the stencil..... there is one thing I am terrible at, PAINTING..... when they are making the stencil for the guage, are the not basically making the decals you could use but pulling them to leave the blanks you are painting? I would guess color matching the other lettering might be a problem, and of course someone would notice the slight difference......

Re: 67-72 Electric speedo

I've been working on mine and everything has been going pretty well til Saturday night when I tried painting the numbering. Everything went to crap when I pulled the stencil off. My number turned out super messy. Any chance you have extra stencils? Or would be willing to sell just a lens. Or better yet could have some of the number stickers made up as jmac mentioned. Thanks in advance.

Re: 67-72 Electric speedo

Dan,

Below are some pictures of my cluster. Everything worked out really well! The only thing I have to do on mine is to enlarge the hole for the light socket because I'm using aftermarket sockets. Everything else fit really well, including the cover on the back. I painted it white as well but it's not shown in the pictures.

The light sockets I'm using:

How bad did it mess up? It sounds like maybe you tried to unmask it before the paint was dry? The problem with just making the numbers out of the vinyl sticker itself is there's only so many colors it comes in, and it would be hard to match toe other numbers even remotely close. Also you would be looking at the adhesive side of the vinyl unless you were to put them on the black inner tin, but then I'm not sure if they would light up quite right. I'll check when I get home and see if I have anymore stencils.

Wgeyer88..... looks good!

I'm pretty sure I must have pulled the decal too soon. I went ahead and pulled the centers out of the 0s and other numbers and thought I was supposed to go ahead and pull the rest of the decal before it dried.

Re: 67-72 Electric speedo

Do you know if the 8000 rpm tach kits will work with a 2005 5.3. I can change the settings in the PCM if need be with HP tuners. Still haven't started on the speedo mod yet. Still working too many hours. Thanks. Jim

They should, it's just a tach after all. You will need to change the tach resolution in the tune from 6 to 3 to double the output since LS engines are set from the factory on 4 cylinder mode.

Thanks and sorry about your decal mishap. If you need a non tach lens I have a couple. I could send you one.

Here is version 475619236455.2

on the plate I moved the included light hole up and inward as shown by the arrow. If you have difficulty getting you lights under the box with the first version I can ship you a new plate free.

I also added a tiny notch under the top speedo mount hole for those like me with the metal speedo bracket.

on the box I removed the wiring hole in favor of a notch as suggested. I also added a little material on the top flange where there was a gap.

I will form the boxes this week and contact those interested.

Re: 67-72 Electric speedo

This is some excellent work guys! I haven't found a Blazer yet, but I do have the 8.1L / 4L85e drivetrain to put into it sitting on the stand. I'd like to keep the interior as original as possible so this mod will definitely work well for me.

That said, I do want to move forward with a metric 0 - 200 km/h version. I'd be happy to pay any R&D expenses with regards to the printer to get the vinyl overlay re-worked.

Re: 67-72 Electric speedo

Here are some pics of the new version. Sorry I took so long I have been busy with the new kiddo and getting caught up at work...

Okay, first thing.. If you want I can cut out your tin like so on a punch press. Well this was the first prototype (sloppy). It will look cleaner than this. This is not included in the plate and box just something extra if you want to save yourself some time but I may need your tin as I think I only have one extra now.

This is the new plate with the changes mentioned previously.

Here is the plate set in place on a rear tin.

If you noticed that one screw hole does not line up that is because this tin was the first prototype and I moved that screw hole.

Here are a few pics of the new box. Wiring hole changed to a slotted hole so you dont have to unwire it to remove. Material added on top edge and corners to tighten up some gaps.

I sent a few messages, if I missed you just let me know.

I have made a template to cut out the rear tin but have not programmed it yet. May have to work on that soon and make a sample to show and see if you guys would like it.

I'd like to get a set with the plate and the box if available. Great time saving piece. Thanks for taking your time to make these. Has anyone used this setup with a reproduction Tach cluster. If so. does it work, any mods required? Thanks again. Jim

It should work with the aftermarket tach just fine, it doesn't appear that Dan has made the box much wider than mine, if at all. You may have to put the tach in first and then the back cover, but that shouldn't be a problem.
