Re: New old guy.

Many little finishing touches. Its not like hes spending 8hrs a day on it. So tomorrow. And he explained I really need at least 3ft of pipe, header to muff, so I scrounged some junk today to get me legal for now. MOW MY FIRST LAWN TOMORROW. Hope to have 35-40 lawns in next 6 wks. Wont have to dumpster dive muffler shops then. My fixed income in winter just doesnt have room for building strokers.

It's funny, I retired in 2006 and started a new career pretty quickly. I now have a little money to play with, but not enough time...

Re: New old guy.

My buddies who are watching this, am I freakin over these over size flexplate holes where it bolts to converter?? Mechanic caught it right off. Thought it might be a used one that got elongated by being loose and slopping around. But it came w rotating assembly and has slightly elongated loles, enough to make it out of round if your not lucky. Holes are like 30% elongated, again, am i freakin over nothing?

Re: New old guy.

Found out my message box was full, cleared it out, find a new flexplate for a 400 only if you are running a 383, must be externally balanced for the 383 crank.

Re: New old guy.

Start, not tighten, all 3 bolts. There should be some play. If you have a bolt/nut, they should be 3/8" The holes in the flexplate will be like 7/16" or so. It is normal to have SOME play.

Re: New old guy.

Some play in a "round" hole not a slotted hole which when damaged will crack eventually. Buy a new plate, don't look for trouble.

Re: New old guy.

It's up and running sweet!! I welded up some exhaust and cruuuuused downtown. 1/3 throttle tells me it wants to get up and go. Old tranny is doing fine. needs to be fine tune timed and maybe some ignition curve adjustment. Drove it a couple of miles home w headers open, Ill NEVER get tired of that sound. Put it in neutral at stoplights and blip blip on the throttle saying, 'hey people, Kennys commin through'. Thanks again to a bunch on this site. If your new here,.post what your doing or planning, and for real, knowledgeable people will chime in and share their experiences.

Re: New old guy.

Just spent AN HOUR! posting pics and writing long story, AND LOST IT ALL. Cant do it again without a break. I had video cam w me but in excitement didnt get initial fire up. Keep watching Mud and others. Heres one of installer who followed me home. His 81 is super sanitary underneath the hood and body. He's an Edelbrock guy, needs to take some time to figure out best way to get max perf out of the Summit carb. Bet i would have an Edel if I would have asked for suggestions on this site before ordering. I can already tell its going to fall down under heavy throttle probably due to timing or curve or carb or all three. They are 'Harris and Son", Kennewick Wa, they hired me to mow their place this summer soI'll be close to their shop all the time. Dad held some class record w 283 in 4 door 57 wagon MANY yrs ago.[IMG][/IMG]

Re: New old guy.

My mechanics will be one of my lawn/grounds accts this summer. Yesterday mowed, weed eat and hauled unwanted from around their buildings to dump. Payment will be mostly work on my truck. There is soooo much I have never done, dont know how to do, dont even have a cement slab to work on etc etc. White round plastic thing in column (blinkers) has dicentegrated, metal bracket on bottom of drivers window fell off and window is in bottom of door. Heater fan wont go off, dizzy and carb need fine tuning. i LOVE working on my truck but am going to let them fix some of these things so it doesnt take a month and is done right the first time.
