Re: What did you do to your truck today part III

My buddy helped me take the fuel door and filler tube off a 95 suburban and mount it on the back driver side were the previous owner bastardized it with a square hole, just big enough to get the cap on. We also pulled the back tailgate cross brace off and repaired where they had welded on a retainer to cover the wood. I'll get some better pics a bit later.

I got the cover from classic industries. I've been work on a guys 62 impala and had him buy it for me for payment for the work. Fit good. I didn't do to bad for my first time doing a cover. i didn't trim my filler close enough and that is the bulge on the drivers side top. But i'll get it better. I did find out the seat is not a 64 seat. had a tag on the frame on it that said May 19, 1961.

How did you strip the pint? Did you sand or chemical strip? Funny I was standing my doors yesterday because I'm gonna get resdy to paint them Krylon Champaign Nuevuoe to imitate the light fawn, while I was standing, I was thinking, this is going to take way too long.

Not sure about lugnutz, but I used a paint and rust stripper in my drill for 95% of it. Sandblaster. For the tight spots.

Flat areas strip best with a 4.5" grinder and a HF poly carbide disc. This fender outer surface took about 45 minutes. Wear a dust mask and always watch the direction of disc rotation when coming to an edge. Smaller areas need a tighter radius so I use a wire wheel on a drill for that. Inside the window channels is best done with media blasting if you can.
I do NOT use chemical strippers for fear that any residue will prevent primer from bonding to the metal. Besides that, chemical strippers are expensive, caustic, and messy.

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III

Worked on installing new bearings in the Cad 500. The thrust went out due to a high pressure transmission problem, which caused issues with the cam bearings.

Sorry about the sideways photo's, not sure why some do this and others don't, they're oriented correctly when I upload.
