Thanks. I really appreciate all the positive comments. This is the truck I have wanted since I got out of high school in the 80s. It's pretty cool to own and now drive my dream truck and yes it's all Chevy trim and emblems

So for you guys that watched my video, you probably noticed the rear marker light was missing. That's because I have been working on my fuel filler and door.
First let me put a disclaimer out there, this was not my invention. I just took what some other guys have already done and went with it.
I used the filler last week, it was a little slow filling but I think I have a fix for that. I will see when I fill up next time.

It's deceiving from the pictures but this was a huge endeavor, not recommended for the novice fabricator, it will test your resolve. I think in the end it will be worth the effort, I wanted to keep the stock look of the bed floor and inside walls.

Started with this:


Bought one of these, then turned the flange down on the lathe

Thanks and yes, I was very careful around the paint. Too much work went into that. It would be best to tape off the whole area around the opening.

Thanks Duane. No it was a pain to make that work out the way I wanted. But it had to route that way. In hindsight, using the blazer tank isn't my first recommendation. I wish I would have just fabricated my own. I will one of these days if I have to take the bed off for any reason. I sucks working under there drilling and fabricating.

The filler looks great Mike. I had a similar, not near as well made set up as yours, but it was too much of a pain trying to fill. I had to pump fuel real slow to keep it from belching gas everywhere and trying to get the hose nozzle in without scratching the paint was a challenge. Keep us posted on your likes/dislikes of it, I would prefer to go back to this type of setup. Truck looks perfect! Dave

Thanks Dave. Did you have a vent like the oem filler has? I used an actual filler pipe from a late model car, then added a vent tube just like the oem fillers had.
The only problem I had the first fill up, I couldn't get the nozzle deep enough to go past the vent. I'm thinking of keeping a short piece of rubber hose with me to get the flow of gas deeper in the filler?
Your thoughts?

In the end, if I have to deal with slow fill ups, I will. I knew there was a possiblilty of that when I started making it. I just prefer this to lowering the tailgate every time. I really didn't want to cut a door into my bed either.

I had the same problem, I ended up carrying along a long skinny funnel with me to help get past the vent. After about 20+ fillups on a 4000 mile round trip to Florida last year I was tired of fighting it. I'm using a filler under the wheel well with a fill thru cap for now, kinda lame but it does the trick for the time being. The gas was starting to stain my satin paint is the other reason I quit using it. I'm sure youll get yours refined so I can try to make mine off your great ideas! Dave

Mike, I have researched the filler options as well, and like the way yours is setup the best. Please give us some feedback once you have gotten a few fill ups in. I wouldn't mind pumping slow if it meant no hiccups, and no gas spilling on the side of that shiny red paint. Looks great though.

Mike, the truck looks and sounds awesome! I'm sure it is great to be driving it again! Also, nice work on the side fill gas door. I'd like to do something similar on mine but diesel fuel nozzles are pretty big. IDK if it'll fit in the bed side.
