Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
More like what did I do to my truck for the last month. Evenings after work are getting shorter and shorter!
Converted to long water pump so I could use 5-rib belt pulleys. Added power steering as well. I had to beat the hell out of the frame since it's a '67 and I didn't want to use spacers. Converted to a 12si alternator and rewired to eliminate the regulator and extend to the passenger side. This site is invaluable when it comes to guides on conversions, I tell ya. (Thanks VetteVet) Test drive today!! |

I am sure you will enjoy the power steering. What box did you use and where did you get it? Also, consider getting that rubber hose out of the wheel well.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
I used a Lares reman for an 87 R10, 3-1/2 turns lock to lock. If I could do it again I'd get a mid- 70's 3-1/2 turn box because the fittings would match up to 67-72 pressure and return lines. That's also why the return is routed that way, I need a hard 90 bend but it seems the squarebodies are routed different for the return lines. It won't be there for long.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
Loaded the stepside on the trailer and took it to powerwash the engine . Came out ok , I put it away this eve and realised I didnt take any pictures. Oh well on a side note the guy that towed my Chevelle last night is interested in it as is . Hes been looking for a stepper for a while wants to put a 12 valve Cummins in it.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
Put an old battery in the truck and turned the motor over for the first time in three years. Had to pull the plugs to get it to turn over as it was a bit stiff from sitting for so long. Also, I taped the hole pattern paper to the firewall for the A/C. Now I just need to build up the nerve to drill it.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
So I took the truck out Tuesday and yesterday, and man is the power steering a treat to park with. I also had a huge amount of slop in the old manual steering box, so cruising down the highway at 55 is actually fun now that there's much less play. The tighter ratio is great too.
I think my reman p/s box is leaking at the input shaft (shocker right). Of course this could be due to poor rebuild quality, but is it possible that my steering column is putting some pressure on the input shaft causing it to leak? When I installed the box, the column was 3/8" off center. I kinda just pushed it over onto the rag joint, so there's probably a little sideways tension on the rag joint/ input shaft. Can I loosen/ adjust the column somewhere so it takes tension off, like at the firewall? |

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
It was yesterday, but, I installed Hood Pop Springs to my '69. Original to late '90s Cadillac and probably other GM makes around that time. I looked for weeks and finally found this. less than 10 minute install for both. Pops hood a half inch, or so.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
I also just brought my C/10 back from the exhaust shop. It was an expensive trip as the tires on my trailer were leaking, seems like I had just put new ones on, but found out it was 16 years ago. Four new tires and rims along with the price of the exhaust, but trailer should last quite a while and truck sounds nice, the guy did an excellent job. All's well for now.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
Despite not being mechanically blessed (challenged is a better description), I managed to get the HEI distributor replaced. Also did the spark plugs and wires. Is it normal that a set of wires has one that isn't the right length? Auto Zone traded for a longer one, but it's not an exact match.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
Found the booster brackets locally. Stripped and painted them. Installed a reman brake booster. Nice to have working Power steering and power disc brakes again.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
Got these bumper guard protectors from 72ironmike installed this morning. Didn't have them when I installed the bumpers or even new they were a thing, until I saw 72ironmike had a set for sell in the parts section.
Once again 67-72 forums showing me I need something I didn't know I needed LOL!

That's a nice looking truck, love that blue!
Speaking of blue, where did you come by your Blue Bowtie rally caps?

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
Found the source of the gas smell in my cab. When I replaced the tank I also replaced all of the EEC hoses and reused the original clamps. Those clamps caused the hose to bunch up under the gap in the clamp and allowed a tiny amount of fuel to leak during left-hand turns and a fuller tank. Maybe I had them too tight but I replaced them with worm-style and no more leak or smell.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
Over the past couple of weeks I have been working on completely updating the front end with an '80 crossmember adding power brakes & power steering and replacing all of the gaskets on the engine. Before I started I had to replace the radiator and noticed that the new radiator was quite pronounced behind the grill so I thought it might look good to paint the radiator while I had it out. Haven't installed it yet, but I think it will look kinda' cool.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
Wish they had them back when I did my Tran Am variable ratio 3 turn LL. I had to fab brackets and steering link. But it held up to the 40s and now will turn the little 20s.
