axles
i wanted to swap some 5 stud 71 axles into my 68 6 stud rear end but it seems they are a bit longer. has any one done this and what does it require I dont relly want to change the whole rearend and not relly wanting to splurge 250.00 for aftermarket axles. whats the cheapest solution.

...not much choice there almost gotta run the 71 rearend or redrill your axels...but be carefull redrilling them because i was going to redrill my 6 bolt axels to 5 on 4 3/4 so i could use the narrower rear but the center hub is 3 1/2" across and my wheels only have a 3" hole which is what the 5 bolt hubs are so i redrilled the 5 bolts.........

If you spend the $$ to re-drill some old axles..... they'll still be old axles. If your making more HP/TQ than factory original, do yourself a favor & upgrade to new, better, aftermarket axles. If it's just a 6-banger/glide..... sure, re-drill 'em.

Some ppl have made spacers to take up the extra room, but I don't have the details on that.

Has anyone ever considered getting axles cut down and resplined.
They do that alot when they narrow them im told they can even cut the notch for a c clip I met phil66 and he had done the spacers on his 70 ? i think it was Not sure what he said he made them out of it but it looked clean. |

Actually, i was refering to spacer as a piece os metal to move the whole backing plate 3/8 inch out on both sides...not wheel lug adapters.
