Radiator question
Ok guys help me out here. I recently found my radiator low on fluid so I filled it up. I started the truck and the fluid disapeared...so I filled it on up with it running. I let it run for a while and the antifreeze started leaking out of the overflow hose. I shut the engine off and check the fluid level again and it is low again. I changed the radiator cap and the thermosat...neither helped.
any ideas????

From what I understand, this is because our trucks don't have a coolant recovery system. I think all you would have to do is put on a later model cap, and a recovery tank, and that will solve the problem. I plan on doing that this summer. Some others have already done this, and will fill in the gaps I may have left.

As already stated, our trucks do not have a expansion/recovery tank. If the cooling system is in good condition the coolant will seek a level probably 2" to 4" below the cap and remain there. If you try to "top it off" it will only push it back out. This is normal.

Acording to my 69 and 70 owners manuals, one inch below the cap is where you should fill it to.

You can get a coolant jug, mount, & hose for about $10 at AutoZone. I put one in just last week.
Did they Really not have Any coolant recovery system... at all? John

There was a dealer installed unit, but otherwise, no recovery system at all.
If you install one, don't forget the later rad cap like mentioned before. |

Thanks for the info...its the little things like this that drive you crazy. Where do you mount the recovery container or does it matter? Also what type of cap do I ask for when I go to the parts store?

You can mount the tank anywhere, theres plenty of room on the passenger side inner fenderwell. Get a cap for a 78 chevy truck, they had the overflow tanks stock. As lkong as the cap has a rubber seal on the smaller part that is the lowest part and a rubber strip under the cap where it seals against the top of the readiator neck(where the cap latches on). Get the lever style so you can release the pressure to take off the cap when the engine is hot if you have to.

When mounting the tank, you want the top of it to be near the same level as the top of the radiator.
My truck is not the prettiest truck in the world, & never will be. So I mounted mine on the inner wheel well. Just 2 little holes. It took me about 45 minutes to decide where to put it. & about 10 minutes to install it.

Actually, it doesn't matter where you put it as far as how high, you can toss an empty 2 liter of mtn dew in the fender pocket if you want, just rin a hose to the bottom of the bottle, doesn't even need to be sealed off or anything.
