CHEAP sound options
Well the crappy Am/FM radio and busted dash speaker just ain't cuttin it anymore. I'm on a pretty tight budget(college student, so really no budget), so I'm gonna have to do the system with what I have. I have a Pioneer head unit, 2 Pioneer 6X9s(salvaged from my old Camaro, RIP), and four 6.5 Xplods (Salvaged from my old Saturn, good riddens). The head unit is a 4 channel so I figured I could put the two 6X9's in the cab corners and then either get a new 4X10 in the dash or figure some way of putting two of the Xplods in the dash. Is there really any way of mounting them in place of the 4X10 (I have no problem with cutting). If they can't go there, is it worth figuring out or should I just get a new 4X10?

Well you can pretty much do what you want.
But what ever you do dont bother wasting your money on a new 4x10. I would toss the 6x9's behind the seat and maybe put the 6.5's in the doors or if you really wanna jurry rig somthing you could try and mound them in the dash. But the dash was origonaly made for 3.5 inchers, so that might be a stretch.

I have 2 5 1/4 in the center dash hole. You have to move the A/C duct around a little , but they will fit. I also have tweeters in the original 3 1/2 locations, and 2 10's behind the seat. It's nothing major, but sounds pretty good. The best thing about it is that everything is hidden from view, except the CD player.

You can fit the 6X9 speakers in the cab corners if you can find some cab corner mounts. I got some from a junkyard truck. Here are some pics of them:

Drill new holes to mount the 6X9 speakers to them, then mount the left one on the right side and right one on the left. This will require that you drill new mounting holes in the cab as well. This changes the angle on the speaker so that the larger magnets will fit in the space in the corner. Several people here have mounted 6.5 inch speakers in their kick panels by doing a little cutting. Here are some pics of ocbaud's installation on his site. http://www.ocbaud.com/interior.html Slonaker Last edited by Slonaker; 04-29-2004 at 09:59 AM. |
