? for the guys running dropped spindles

I have been running cut coils on the longhorn for about 12yrs , & am looking to upgrade. at present (for time issues), a 2 1/2 " dropped spindle looks to be a good way to go. A 1 1/2" spring, or bags should put me where I want to be on "stance"(along with spindles). With a 2 1/2 drop spindles, are you guys haveing problems with the lower a arms scraping the pavement? thanks for any input, or options.....crazyL

i've got spindles with 245x60x15 tires stock springs and i've got 31/2inches clearance for the a-arms haven't scraped them up in the 3years i've got them on

I run 1.5 springs and 2.5 spindles and have for three years, no problems with hitting, ever. Michael

no probs here

I have 2 1/2 spindles with air bags on my burb and do not have problems unless I have the drive height extremely low were i now it will hit. But at normal driving conditions I have no problems.

Thanks for the input guys, it looks like 2 1/2" spindles & bags need to be on the front of my 69 the back will be a load of work....still runnin the leafs crazyL

attn crazy longhorn

On the leaf rear truck the crossmember at the below the rear cab wall of the truck has the mounting pounts already drilled i it for the factory trailing arms. You could installs these factory trailing arms the just add an early calssics adjustable panhard rod kit and an air ride tech kit for the rear and it would be a fairly simple install.

I wish it were that simple, but the longhorn is a different frame than the other pickups(same frame as a 133"wb 1 ton dump truck ). i think my best route will be a 4 bar & big step notch to fit the bags.... crazyL

I also have the 2.5" drop spindles, with one coil removed from the stock springs...have note rubbe or bumped a thing.

Longhorn, For a quick and inexpensive fix try a flip kit for your leafs and remove a couple of the heavy springs out of the pack. You are not going to be hauling any heavy loads anyway with this setup. This will net you a 5+ inch drop in the rear. DJM supplies new poly bump stops in the the drop kit. The kit is only about $60 and includes new shock mount brackets too. I did this on my son's '77 with 2.5 inch spindles plus 2.0 inch springs (up front) and it was perfect. The rear was never a problem but your front cross member may pick up some gravel if you stray off the pavement...LOL!

The rear isnt too big an issue(other than its still leaf), its been flipped. where the trouble comes in is the added weight to the rear(fuel cell)....good for traction/ride, but it set the @ss down, the truck sits level....& I like that "nose down " rake. im not done adding weight to the back(or moving it back anyway).....maybe a set of bags would be the ticket up front to give a little more "adjustment"? a big thanks for the heads up on the gravel "plowin" arms (off the beatin path).... crazyL

2 1/2" spindles and 1 1/2" springs here... the only thing I've bottomed out are my cheapo long tube headers. I don't need bags to throw sparks.....
I wish I would have thought about lowering it when I bought those headers... Oh well more money to spend.

the hooker comps i run are full lenght, but havent seen the pavement on a 3" drop. I think i can go another 1 - 2" on drop without problems.....(i hope). at any rate, the collector flanges hang about 2 1/4" below the rails on my longhorn......I think the eng crossmember would take the "roadrash" 1st. all my exhaust runs under the crossmembers, but is tucked up nice & tight. i have built 2 custom crossmembers, 1 for the trans, & 1 for the carrier bearing (2x6x1/4" wall)& notched on the bottom pretty good! i dont plan to lay this old truck on its belly, but would like a 4 1/2 -5 " front drop @ ride height, also with proper front geometry. Can you say VERY FINICKY! crazyl
