Tilt Steering for 67 chevy? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Just found this site today and looks like a great place to get some information. I have 1967 Chevrolet Truck was wondering what steering column I could use to convert it to tilt steering. The Steering column that is on it is currently giving me trouble when trying to put it into gear, but on th column it works fine. I want to get it fixed but would like to have tilt steering if possible. Thanks for any help that is available.

I found that the tilt steering for these trucks is pretty much useless unless you are a very short person. From centerline, there is only range of motion downward with very little or no motion upward. It would make more sense to me for it to tilt upward ....... seems backwards to me. So in my opinion, it might not be worth the extra $$$$. Anyone else have an opinoin about this?

If you have an auto you can use any of the pickup tilts through 72. You can also use a van tilt, the shaft is about 2 inches longer so you have to crush the steering sleeve, its a real popular mod as it can be pretty cheap. Do a search on van tilt installation and you should find plenty of info.

Your 67 if it still original may have a non-collasping lower shaft... you can grab a collapsable one from a little bit newer 68-72 truck. Sounds like your talking an automatic tranny tilt column, so this should get you going.

I highly recomend the tilt, even though it does tilt a little funny, I wonder how I did without now that I have it.
You can get a van tilt for next to nothing from a wrecking yard most likely. I normally get them for 25 - 35 bucks depending on what yard it is in...of course there are the yards who think they are gold too...one guy told me "I saw one on e-bay for over 100 bucks...so I'll only charge you $75"
Pffft...as if.

Thanks everyone for welcoming me to the forum. I think it will be very helpful. Yes, the steering coulumn is an automatic and thanks for the input. What year van do you recommend 70's? Here is a pic of my truck in case anyone is interested.

A lot of the 70's can tilts will work. They look almost exactly like our original tilts so its pretty easy to tell when you have found one. I got one from a local yard for $40 and it had all of the levers and everything.

72 - 80 I think. If it is a tilt, and has the ignition in the dash, then you have a winner.

GM first used the tilt(4spd&TH350/400)in trucks in`69.Thru`72 is identical.Don`t pay truck price for van tilt,beware.`72 vans until locking column(year?)works,as mentioned.Other than collapsing to fit,you need to relocate the neutral saftey switch.Vans are why black NOS steering wheels kept popping-up before the repros were available,same(almost)column/same steering wheel.Nice small-window.
