I have been told that the '70 rear axles will interchange with the '71-'72 rear ends. They are supposedly the same length and will just slip right in. According to the source, I have been told the '67-'69 axles are longer and will not work but that the '70-'72's are all the same length. Is this true?

I have been told that the 67-69 are different as well. There is a company that sells the 5 lug conversion axles for the 67-69 diffs though.

They changed the length in the middle of the 70 model year, so you would have to measure a 70 to see which it is.

I think 67-70 are 3/4 of an inch shorter then some of the 70 and 71-72. I have 72 axles in my 69 rearend and had to space the backing plate so the brake would go in the drum all the way.

Yeah I had to do the same thing I had 3/4" spacer on each side allso used the newer drums.

FYI the 72 type axles are the same as '80 for the standard 10 bolt. 12 bolt (DANA 44) are same length but different spline count & diameter.

Welcome to the board. Just a helpful hint, go into user CP and update your profile. Include at least the state you live in. Also, in the signature spot jot down what year truck you have. It makes it real easy for people to then tell you that they have those parts, or would be willing to come and help you, etc.

Early Classic has the 5 lug conversion axles

They can go either way for '70. I was lucky had the wider rear.

I used a pair from a 77 12 bolt in my 70. Fit fine.
