14 bolt lokcer ?

ok firts off im in the middle of a transmission, transfer case, axle swap. also going to lift it 4" and put on 35,s instead of 33's.
i have a 14 bolt ff rear with 4.56 gears and a detroit locker is 380-450 depending on where you get it. drive train direct makes a 14 bolt mimi spool for 189. what is teh difference in that and a detroit other than a couple hundred dollars.

thanks
stan

The DL allows the differential to work when turning corners while the spool does not.

The spool will be really hard to deal with on the street, especially with a tire that large. There is NO slippage with a spool and it will cause greater tire wear. It can cause erratic steering too, generally a "push", which also increases front tire wear.

A Detroit Locker can do the same thing, more so than other "posi-traction" type units. If you do not decelerate or at least lift the throttle slightly the unit stays locked and acts like a spool (locked solid). Lifting the throttle enough to allow the truck to coast will allow the unit to unlock the slower (inside) wheel. This can cause noticeable "clunk". Detroit Lockers are far smoother than a Spool, but you WILL know that it is back there.

my brother in laws truck has a detroit locker

and when i drove it i never noticed it unlock at all. it seemed to be locked all the time especially on the corners. the rear tire made little chirps in the parking lot driving at around 5 mph.Mike C i would love to buy it but there is a possibillity i may be getting laid off soon and i cant spend that kind of money until i know for sure. im just researching this stuff right now. if you still have it in a few weeks when i know for sure let me know. are there different ones for different gear ratios? i will have 4.56 the pinion has 9 ring has 41.

The Detroit for the 14 bolt actually uses the open case. Goes inside pretty much like the Lok-Right. That's why the 14 bolt locker is the cheapest Detroit. All of the others come with a new case.

Driving that slow will probably not force it to un-lock. I got a friend w/ a detroit in his 79 and it unlocks when you get up to speed. 15-20 mph through a turn. It actually force the outside tire to tuirn faster than the drive shaft speed.
