shaving drip rail

how hard is it to shave the drip rail. ive seen it on a couple of trucks and as thinking about shaving it. any info would be great.

Everything I have read advises to cut out a small section, then weld it up. Then cut out a small section, and weld it up....repeat until you are done.

I don't know if you watch Trucks!, but the copperhead that they redid on there has the shaved rails. I didn't get to see how they did it, but it looks awesome shaved....totally different look to the truck. I was thinking on doing it also, have to see what I am getting myself into first!!! If you find pics, or if anyone has experience doing this, please post!!

Ive just seen trucks with it done at car shows and the owners weren't around to ask any info. if i can find any pic i'll post them. or if i find more info on it.

Check out this months copy of Custom Classic Trucks (july issue) it has a tech article on shaving drip rails. The shave was done by a shop called Hot Rods and Hobbies on a 68 Chevy truck. They also rounded and removed the crease at the back of the cab roof in addition to clipping the gutters. The end result was a roof that looks like it came from the factory with out drip rails.

The mod done on this truck was a lot more involved than just cutting off the drip rails, welding everything back and smoothing it over with bondo. They built new panels to reform the roof skin around the door. These panels incorporated a beaded edge which blended with the bead on the windshield post. The windshied post skin was slightly reshaped and twisted to improve the fit with the door. A lot of work for sure but it's one of the few drip rail shave jobs I've seen that really looked right.

man, i dig the look, but i don't think on my daily driver that would be a good mod, with the rain, snow, sleet, hail . . . . :p

what about the windshield w/o gasket like a late model truck. saw one in i thnk street trucks (yellow phantom dually) a couple of years ago. anyone done this? sounds easy enough. just weld some pins in the channel like a late model, have a new piece of glass cut to fit the hole better and butyl it up! i am sure it is more complicated than that, but imagian not having to get the dish soap out to replace a windshield! that should shave about 4 hours off the labor!
