Angry Dang Gas price...

OK at what point do we say it just cost to much to fill her up. As you can see
I didn't build mine for good mpg. If I take it easy it might get 8 mpg and have to use 93+. This was the motor that I couldn't afford back in my younger days now it lood like I can't afford it in my older days. Guess I can drive her on special occasions or when I want to blow a hundred up in the air. Dang this sounds like the death of the Hot Rod BB Chevy

Yup, gas prices do "bite" I have the 383 weaned to 89-90 octain....the alum heads help a bunch, & a little recurve on the ign. she still doesnt do well with milage, & is only driven once in a while! i hope to see gas prices get better.....but im not counting on it. it looks like time to set up a v6/ 5spd Ranger or s 10 for a daily cruiser.....crazyL

well I heard on the news that the saudi's have stepped up to the plate and is going to pick up where opec has dropped off . This is susposed to happen in June . Hopefully we will be back to normal soon.

Well if you want mileage get a 4 cyl for work and drive this old trucks on the weekend. Drove 400 miles this weekend on $25. I wonder if the gas will go back down. Readin' in the paper about RVer's not goin' alot this summer.If I had something that got less than 10 mpg I couldn't afford it when gas was cheap!!

they say the saudi thing won't affect prices for 3months and then it's just going to "stabilize" the price structure.the price that you see mid to the end of june will be the new "normal" prices . you just have to get used to it.

I was reading here in the paper last week and they where discussing how the gas prices are forceing the contractors and individual truck drivers out of business and they were expecting that for every $0.10 that the gas prices goes up 1000 contractors/individual truck dirvers with go under ... but i have two gas hogs myself i have my 68 gmc daily driver but and also a F**d truck that i built up and it gets about 6 mpg and i cant remember that last time i actually filled it up all tha way ...and just take a look around the next time you go to the gas station and just see how many people are haveing to count out change just to get gas .. it sucks

How is the price on propane doing? Might be a good time too convert if its going to be lower than gas and if this is going to be the new gas standard.

They are predicting a £5 sterling gallon over here in the near future following the weekends attack on oil workers in Saudi Arabia. That works out to $9.19 a gallon (thats an imperial gallon which is 1.2 US gallons) Gotta get me an economical diesel or some new wheels for my bicycle!

Yes Phil, it hurts doesn't it! One thing that has interested me, there doesn't seem to be the regional discrepancies now that there used to be before this "crisis", pretty much the same all over the UK now. I'm a trucker by trade so I get around a bit.

Woul;d you think that my 70 CST would benefit from an LPG conversion? If so, how much am I looking to pay out?

i am not sure how gas prices are elsewhere but here in portland they have dropped 30-40 cents. i saw chevron regular for 1.99. so thats like 2.19 for super. the highest i saw it was 2.55 for super

People dont buy trucks for mileage, when I got my 72 C20 I knew it would get horrible gas mileage and will get even worse now that I added some performance mods to it. I also bought a cheap Datsun wagon, an old 74 710, for mileage. Even if gas was at a dollar a gallon I'd still not drive the C20 as a daily driver. My 83 El Camino will use even more gas but I dont care, its a toy and will be driven for pleasure and fun, not for a daily driver. Gas in the US is still one of the cheapest in the world but it does suck that its high as it is.

I had a rough price for converting mine of between £1500 to £2000 depending on which kit and tank size. My problem is I would have to have the heads seen to as you need hardened valve seats putting in for LPG as it is more likely than unleaded to cause valve seat recession. Is it worth it? I think that depends on the mileage you intend to do. As the crummy government have now removed the hold on tax on LPG it's going to go up at each budget by more than unleaded and so the price differential will disappear eventually. It just depends how quickly that happens and whether you'll do enough miles to make back the installation costs before it hits the same price as unleaded. Remember, once that happens you get slightly less MPG from LPG than you do from unleaded.

I had a 76 3/4 ton 4x4 that was run on propane. Mileage was worse with propane, less power, and a hassle to find a place that sold propane in volume. I converted it to gas, put an Edelbrock intake, a Holley carb, and conmverted one of the propane tanks to use gas in it. The stock tanks were gone so I just put a cap on where the propane was put in so all I had to do take the cap o ff and put gas in. It ran better and had a lot more power. The advantage to propane is that it burns much cleaner than gas but it also does not have any way to lube the valve seats, long term use of propane will wear out the valve seats quicker than with gas.
